France outwrestle All Blacks in titanic Test for one-point win

Stade de France has been spoilt with some classic rugby contests over the past 14 months, and fans were set for another one with the All Blacks in town.

Just one point separated the two proud nations after as exhausting of a Test ever witnessed. An early second-half surge from the hosts put their noses in front, and the ensuing toe-to-toe tussle tested every aspect of each team’s game. France, in the end, took the spoils to the tune of 30-29.

France opened the contest with a multi-phase attack that tested the New Zealand defence in tight and out wide, with Antoine Dupont getting quick ball to operate with. A collision between Tevita Tatafu and Samipeni Finau saw the ball spilled by the French big man and Finau helped form the field with a concussion. 21-year-old Peter Lakai took the field for New Zealand and Georges-Henri Colombe soon replaced Tatafu for France.

The visitors’ lineout defence was on display early, stealing France’s first attempt from the sideline. The hosts on the other hand got their first points of the game from a scrum penalty just shy of the seven-minute mark.

Handling errors were registered from both sides in the early minutes before they found their feet in the Test.

The All Blacks launched an ambitious attack just moments after the France score, with risky but superbly executed offloads fracturing the French defence as Ardie Savea made metres down the left wing and set up Pater Lakai for his first All Blacks try.

The pace of the Test had kicked into high gear and both sides knew exactly where they wanted to find space against their opponents. France looked to get the ball wide with cross-field kicks and New Zealand were eager to get front foot ball with swift handling from their forwards while steadily shifting the point of attack.

New Zealand’s scrum started to turn up the heat on the French and some special defence from Cam Roigard off the back of a 26th-minute contest saw the halfback snatch the ball as Gregory Alldritt looked to offload it, with the halfback running away to score and extend his side’s lead to 14-3.

In response, France rolled up their sleeves and went to their big men with phase play attack just one pass off the ruck. After battering the Kiwi defence and making powerful metres, Les Bleus had shrunk the Kiwi line and exploited that fact by sending the ball wide to Romain Buros who scored the hosts’ opening try.

With New Zealand’s next attack, France were caught offside leading to a free run for the Kiwis, but there was no way through the blue line so Beauden Barrett stepped up the the tee to extend his side’s lead to seven.

After an exhausting first half, another New Zealand attack again struggled to crack France’s defence and the first half came to a close with a long-range drop-goal attempt from Beauden Barrett going wide.

France were a different beast coming out of the sheds in the second half, using their behemoths in the tight five to chew through metres and bully their way towards the New Zealand line. After Emmanuel Meafou rumbled upfield with a handful of Kiwi defenders in his wake, an offside infringement from New Zealand resulted in a French lineout and just three minutes into the half, France were in.

New Zealand returned in kind but after making significant ground surrendered possession with poor execution in the face of a resilient French defence. Tupou Vaa’i tried an offload near halfway but it hit the turf and Thomas Ramos won the race to the loose ball, putting a kick through and the pace of Louis Bielle-Biarrey won his side another seven points.

New Zealand then turned to the bench and the injection of Damian McKenzie at fullback had an instant impact, getting his side on the front foot. It was again an offside infringement that earned New Zealand another three points.

Just minutes later, a French rolling maul earned a penalty when Codie Taylor was caught re-entering the contest illegally and France re-established their seven-point lead.

The lung-busting phase play continued as the match entered its final quarter and so did the back-and-forth on the scoreboard, with New Zealand claiming another three points from the boot of Damian McKenzie.

A Will Jordan intercept then ended another French surge, getting his side back down the French end of the field where they won another penalty, claimed another three points and closed the French lead to just one point.

Antoine Dupont shifted to flyhalf with the French substitutes as the attritional nature of the game claimed another victim in Paul Boudehent. The flanker’s departure resulted in Peato Mauvaka re-entering the game at blindside.

Penalties in quick succession saw both sides claim three points, and the marathon of this immense Test continued.

Heroic efforts from both sides played out in front of 80,000 enthralled French fans. Fans after being treated to one of the most dramatic Tests in recent memory, were ultimately left to celebrate a famous one-point win.

Haha I know I know! Don't worry, I have a plan to save them!

Here's a hint at it, the Highlanders actually become the SI team in my model!

Yeah, agreed. I think they can make 1 neighbour work cost effectively though, but yea, how does that equate to how a comp like that would work right.

J
JWH 18 days ago

No way you can drop the Landers! One team for the whole SI??? Where are you from, Wellington?

5 team conferences make the conferences more competitive, more games, and thus more viewership.

I was thinking that there would be 0 competition between teams outside of conferences, until the knockout stages. A bit like Champions League, and promotion/relegation from these conferences once financial stability is there.

Missed the live match but just watched the replay. A couple of very poor refereeing decisions had a big impact. Obstruction against Taylor was rubbish. Followed by bad decision in line-out maul (no "use it" requirement of French maul despite going backwards and sideways) leading to go ahead points. Referee was not up to it. He has had plenty of chances but still very poor. That was a big part of the game result. AB's will again get to the level they will overcome poor officiating but they are not quite there yet. Having said all that, France have strength across the board and their result is not undeserved. As widely agreed, the top 5-7 teams are pretty close to any match-day results and small differences in officiating, bounce of the ball or luck can sway a result.

Why 5 sorry?

Would love for SA to partake. That would mean it has to be a large comp, where say it regularly competes home/away with NA, and another random conference away, another home, etc?

I think you're getting into even more difficulty flight wise than having South Africa though. A team based out of Santiago is about as good as I can see including a SAn team in SR proper.

Agree re the new venture, not a fans league. I wouldn't be too fused about it otherwise though, it will heavily draw on NH talent (the talent playing in NH but with no real attachment to it), so they could hve the 50 best kiwis playing it instead of Top14/Japan for all I care. I also wouldn't be surprised if they know what they're doing. The 7's circuit sells out in a similar fashion to non rugby fans, and this will be far more prestigious. That it will mess with the north real bad makes be kinda want to see it happen, but you're right, probably not the best way for rugby to reach the global appeal its after.

I like the logistics of 4 team conferences as well, dropping the highlanders and perhaps having the other teams basically finance that group of NZs and having them still eligible for the ABs.

Kiwis Winger's again blame the ref blame the tmo when it comes to whingeing if there was a world cup you would win it and always be top of the rankings you were lucky to beat England Ireland never turned up and France demolished you go have a good sulk or find a sheep

R
RedWarrior 23 days ago

Ramos was responsible for three tries against England and Galthie doesn't learn.

NZ just piled down his channel and the predictable holes from Blue players shoring the vulnerability. NZ managed to easily muscle through this vulnerability to take a HT lead. Ramos sometimes kicks to make partial amends for his defensive ghosts performances. In 2023 he kicked a restart dead with 5 mins to go v SA. Move on please France.

France and Dupont broke off some of their rust to secure the win, but it was a tighter than it really should have been. Strong NZ forward pack with not much bite to the backs. If NZ don't win the RWC in 2027 they will be 16 years into beating their 24 year drought record. France have so much to improve. NZ tend to only win home RWCs. Sorry Kiwis, I don't see it with this team.

In non shocking news NZ commentators again blaming their loss on TMO/ref.

Great game , two ludicrous decisions changed the game. Taylor was not obstructing, and the neck roll wasn’t a roll at all. Well done France.

What a night. An amazing double header SA/England then NZ/France. A real feast of rugby. The AB/France game was probably a higher quality game and certainly more exciting in the last ten minutes although the Boks were defending a two score lead with 14 men and a tighthead playing loosehead. Somehow the energy had gone out of England legs. Then the second act of the thrilling play. I can tell our Kiwi enemies on the field mates off it that I have never heard a group of Saffas shout as loudly for the AB's as we all did. We all shouted noooooooooo when Scott chose three points with four minutes to play. The AB's are NEVER that charitable to the Boks. After the relief of seeing off a very much improved England. As midnight approached The party lost some momentum when the final whistle left another one point gap - this time to the wrong side. We don't mind beating the AB's by one point but we reserve that right and resent anyone else doing it. Similarly we don't like going down to the only other team that we believe has real bragging rights on the planet but if we have to go down we would rather it be to the AB because then at least we know we've been beaten by a proper team. But sorry Scott - that was a kak call and it spoilt our party.

True, you might having something in this being their WC Final and not being able to last three big games in three weeks (ala RWC acclimatizing), that was Razor's impetus behind his selections and leadups/preparation for these first 3 weeks (for us).

With these guys being in the first two (into third) months of their season too.

Haha he certainly looked like he'd spoiled the party after the game too, we'll both have to expect he makes it up somehow 😁 I thought your 1 point win over them were the two best performances of the RWC, I think that was NZ's best performance this season too. Too bad we couldn't put a nail in the coffin like we did last week 😉

Roigard had a great game & Ratima seems to be a clear step down.gone off the boil these last few games. Love watching Tamaiti play & the way he absolutely melted Colombe a few times. Sititi was watched very closely, but still had an above average game.

Dupont did enough during the game, but he also seems hampered with Ramos at 10 who imo is crap in that position & also on defence. Ntamack will make a massive difference which is obvious, but more so with Ramos currently at 10. Can't believe how poor the French scrum was tbh

J
JWH 22 days ago

What does Tamaiti need to do to get a scrum pen??? 😓

J
Jmann 24 days ago

ABs will be bitterly disappointed with that. Even with the appalling officiating from a ref who is out of his depth at this level. They'll still know that they were the dominant team and superior in almost every facet of the game.

Is it possible for NZ to lose without blaming the referee or TMO? Do they have any self awareness? You are by a long way the most unsportsmanlike whingers in world rugby.

My MoM would be Bielle - Biarrey. His try was only one element of a great all round game. I say that with 15 mins still to watch....maybe he was MoM ?

d
d 24 days ago

Is it just me, or is Scott Barrett the worst captain we've seen yet? and every time he speaks to the ref , he looks like he's asking how many minutes more does he have to play.

Anyway, 2 wins and a close loss against the big 3, I'll take that. This side is starting to look exciting. Big doubts about Razor's judgement, but if he can improve at the same rate as his players, we are looking good.

G
GrahamVF 24 days ago

England aren't anywhere near the big three mate.

J
JPM 24 days ago

Great game from both teams. As a France fan obviously happy with the one point win (for a change to the WC quarter final !) and the second half performance. Galthié choice to select Ramos as 10 instead of Jalibert (in the absence of Ntamack) was right and paid off. But Villière choice confirmed to be a disaster. The youngster Boudehent is a future great as well as some other ones on the bench. Buros played well for his first cap and might be a serious contender as 15 for Ramos when Ntamack is back. 5 key players were injured: Ntamack, Baille, Atonio, Cros and Penaud.

H
Hellhound 24 days ago

Close or not, 1 point or not, win is win. Certainly both teams played better than the Boks. Both teams can feel happy with their performances overall. Decision making from SB leaves a lot to be desired especially at the end. Going for a 3 pointer instead of for a try is just madness.

Razor need to read the game better. In a tight game like this, planned subs go out the window. Those not performing should be replaced, not those who plays very well. That made a big difference in the end. The coach is as much to be blamed for this loss as the captain's calls.

J
JW 24 days ago

It was honestly great to just see France having their Rugby World Cup moment in the end. For us, it was the Final we were playing.

Yeah Buros was good. Both teams can get a lot stronger (re to player selection) but was still a good NZ style v French style rugby outcome!

J
JW 24 days ago

Wow, cracking game, that's what I'm talking about!

Well played France, great fight and flair, deserved win. Best All Black performance this year, looked so good without a 10 I always thought someone would pull it off towards the end.

Razor has been a big disappointment this year. Stuffed around so many players, namely Aumua, and here Finau and 6 in general. Ardie should have gone to 7 much earlier in the season and one of the locks should have been sharing 6 duties with Finau. Instead, we go down early and have no 6 and a guy essentially in his first game gets thrust into the fray when the back row should have just been able to move Scott Barrett or Tupou Vai'i to 6 keeping the back row stable and Lakai's role to make the positive impact late in the game that the team lacked this morning.

I hope Razor and his team to a hell of a lot of debriefing in the off season but it's all good because I can see this team putting the hundred on Italy this time around next week.

J
JWH 24 days ago

Razor didn't want to put Tuipulotu on too early, as that would ruin his impact. I see where you are coming from here, I would've liked to see more moves with Sititi off the back of the scrum with such a big blindside and Ardie in support. Could be a devastating move if we actually backed ourselves to go for it.

Congratulations France - Ratima had a shocker - now I will get stuck into S Barrett for not kicking to the line after a penalty for us to get a try with only 7 mins remaining to go ahead instead like everytime before he took the kick and got the points - problem was and he couldnt figure it out every time they did that France either camped down in our half soaking up time or scored again at kick off - the time for nz to go for a try was then and get ahead - who cares about a kick that only gets you within one - absolute brain fade and from what I saw with robertsons reaction in the stand was he agreed with Barrett - if ya coach is thinkin the same way theres no hope - the ref had an absolute shocker and so did the video ref - I have zero confidence in match officals when its tight thats when they come in and cheat

No soar grapes from me just frustration - NZ have some way to go - they beat England and Ireland but its now 3 loses in a row against France and 4 against SA back down we go in world rankings this was just one peak to much very disappointing year with 4 loses ouccchh and we showed so much promise early on in game ahead at half time - we probably should have brought our subs on straight away France never gave up excellent in defense when it mattered

NZ had plenty of time to go ahead but 3 pointers were not going to do it - I would say if we had gone for the kick to touch with our throw in if we hadnt of scored a try then France would have likely given away a penalty - thats territory pressure & the odds are high that would have happened - we had fresh legs a slightly better bench surprised we didnt back ourselves

J
JW 24 days ago

You should spend more time listening to the players and coaches after the game than moaning! 😁

A
AW 24 days ago

Without a doubt, NZ ran out of options when 7 mins from the end with poor leadership decisions to go for the post when you are trailing, did not make sense. It was as if 2 Scott’s had lost the will to win, when NZ were on the front foot. JK even mentioned it in his interview. But a brilliant performance from France to keeping the pressure on NZ and let NZ not execute with poor handling and lack of patience! Good win France‼️

need a general at 10 so play doesn't break down , mounga is King . ratima needs to tighten up . reiko isn't good enough to play centre . hopefully joseph manu finds his way home . he's just as dangerous as suali'i and would be perfect xfactor in the 13 jersey .

we didn't get the win . but Im happy to see glimpses of a bright future .

Great game.

Congrats France,

Great effort ABs & Razor gang.

Most play, discipline & errors under control as last week, but it was twice the pressure & speed. A few unforced errors by ABs in the 2nd half.

I didn't see a need to replace Roigard.

Maybe an example of when so close & in the final & getting a penalty in the 22, of going for tries when the ABs were making significant gains all over the field.

1 ridiculous neck roll penalty 3 points against you took it from you.

Again, ever expecting perfection is a nonsense.

J
Jmann 24 days ago

They were better than the French. But a few crucial moments took the victory away from them.

J
JWH 24 days ago

Yeah I thought they looked pretty good. Not perfect, but good. Gave the French a run for their money. Just have to back ourselves more with the lineout maul. We have such an excellent pack but we just won't use it, it is so frustrating.

'Razor's conservatism is in danger of halting New Zealand's progress'

Razor seems totally at sea to me.

He squandered his first year when he could have been bringing in loads of new players at the expense of results. Instead he chased the win from week to week, ironically using the same players that have been underperforming and NOT winning for years to put in mediocre performances.

The new generation of players is here right now but Razor is clearly not ready for them. Lakai, Love, Proctor, Plummer etc... could all have 5 or so games under their belt. Instead they get 2 minutes at the end of the game to win a "cap" like this is still the 80s.

He had a license to be bold this year - an obligation after 4 years of conservatism under Fozzie. But in reality it wasn't until inuries forced his hand that any progress was made this season.

Worryingly, much like Fozzie, he seems unable to diagnose and fix what is not working on attack. He desperately needs some better assistants around him.

The comparison to SA is not really a fair one. Rassie is probably under the least pressure of anyone in all of World Rugby this year coming off back to back World Cups win. It's like the ABs in 2016 - everyone thought they would have a post world cup slump but it was the exact opposite. With no pressure and no fear they payed some of the most incredible rugby that has ever been played by the All Blacks, every new player was an instant super star and it seemed like nothing could go wrong. Much the same way 2017 hit the ABs like a ton of bricks I'm sure SA will endure something similar in 2025.
