The History of Japanese Rugby League One

Japan Rugby League One was created in 2022 but its roots can be traced back to 1948. This was the year the Japan Company Rugby Football Championship was founded. After 55 successful years, the championship was replaced by the Top League in 2003.

Both of these earlier iterations featured company-owned teams and their success popularised rugby union in Japan. Today, Japan Rugby League One has elevated the sport to a professional level. In fact, the league boasts star-studded teams that have been home to top internationals such as Aaron Smith, Beauden Barrett, Brodie Retallick, Dane Coles and Liam Williams.
