Netherlands Rugby

The history of the Netherlands rugby team dates back to the 1930s, when the team played in its first ever international fixture. They sadly lost against Belgium, 6-0.

Despite playing sporadically against teams such as Germany, Romania and Belgium, the Netherlands did not find their feet on the international stage until the 1960s and 70s, when they began to play regularly.

However, despite strong ties to the British Islands and France, rugby has never really taken hold in the Netherlands, where football and other sports are still more popular. That said, the country is still home to more than 100 clubs and around 8,000 players.

Due to the sport’s relatively low profile in the country, the Netherlands rugby team is not considered to be one of Europe’s elite and they don’t regularly face top opposition. For instance, they’ve only faced England once in their history and they’ve never played against Ireland or France.

That said, today the team does compete in the Rugby Europe Championship, which is only one level below the Six Nations. Perhaps we’re entering a golden era for Dutch rugby.
