LONG READ Ireland are Six Nations favourites but issues are starting to mount

When Tadhg Furlong flew home early from Ireland’s Quinto da Lago training camp, selecting their starting XV looked simpler. Furlong has played only three games, this season, so may well have been eased into Six Nations action with a bench role. As it turned out, Furlong’s calf issues opened up the door for a Finlay Bealham redemption arc, with Thomas Clarkson backing the tighthead up.

On Monday, most of us that follow Irish rugby closely would have confidently bet on what 15 names would be on Simon Easterby’s team-sheet. There were some questions about Sam Prendergast after he picked up a knock in training, but he was back at it before the squad wrapped up in Portugal. As it turned out, the new interim coach had a selection surprise in store. Out hobbles the injured Joe McCarthy, with Tadhg Beirne returning to the second row, where he was named in the latest World Rugby Dream XV. Stepping in at blindside is Ryan Baird – long touted as the marauding answer in the position but a player that has yet to truly make his mark at Test level.

Heading into the 2025 Guinness Six Nations opener against England, Ireland are aiming to be the first side in 36 years to win a third successive title. They retained the Six Nations, last year, drew a Test series over in South Africa and tied the bow with wins over Australia, Fiji and Argentina. Still, confidence is not strolling in plain sight, across these shores, as much as it was in past years. There may not be many doubts within the squad, and their coaching ticket, but the general public is not so sure. It has not been easy to shake the 2024 losses to England, South Africa and, most disappointingly, New Zealand.

Choice clearly made at 10

Before he went on that British & Irish Lions sabbatical, it looked, for all money, that Andy Farrell was telling Easterby who exactly he wanted as his starting outhalf.

Shy of quality minutes in the 10 jersey, Easterby selected Prendergast for the Emerging Ireland tour to South Africa, and started him in all three matches. Farrell went with Jack Crowley to start against New Zealand, with Ciarán Frawley in reserve. Crowley was average – no calamities but little influence dictated over events – while Frawley was poor, off the bench. Prendergast made his Test debut the following week and finished the Autumn Nations Series with starts in wins over Fiji and Australia.

Before he handed over the reins to Easterby, Farrell tried to get the concept of team over individual across to the media, in the hope we would tame down on the ‘dropped’ and ‘axed’ headlines. Rugby, Farrell insisted, is a squad game and he needs much more than the 15 starters he submits to print before each Test match.

“When you guys (the media) feel like Jack has been dropped, he’s not,” said Farrell. “And when you guys feel like he’s pissed off, he’s not. He’s a team player. He’s a team player and he gets the bigger picture himself… everyone keeps growing together. It’s part of the squad.”

Farrell continued, “Have I ever dropped Bundee (Aki), Ringer or Robbie (Henshaw), in your eyes? No. It’s rotation that’s good for us in the moments when somebody has played a lot of rugby, not enough rugby, to freshen the team up, etcetera. They’re brilliant players, they’re good team players, so we work it out together.”

Crowley has not been helped by Munster’s middling form, this season, but delivered his best performance of the season in the narrow Champions Cup loss to Northampton Saints. Prendergast is a way off being the finished project but his passing range is superb and the team plays with a more aggressive line when he is there. Farrell has made up his mind, and Easterby concurs.

Changing of the guard almost complete

The biggest omission from Easterby’s matchday 23 was former captain and lineout specialist Peter O’Mahony. Ireland’s lineout was successfully targeted in the Autumn Nations Series, so the temptation must have existed to keep O’Mahony in the mix. However, the 35-year-old is out and it is looking certain that this will be his last Six Nations. Jack Conan takes the 20 jersey.

O’Mahony stated, after leading Ireland to Six Nations glory, last March, that it would have been a nice way to bow out of international rugby. Farrell told the Cork native he wanted him around a while longer. He has played five more Tests but only started once. Farrell looked at Beirne in the blindside role, while Easterby is now set to give 6-foot-6 Leinster forward Ryan Baird a run in the team.

The changing of the guard has been stalled by injuries to Joe McCarthy and Craig Casey, but some supporters would have preferred younger players like Thomas Ahern, Cormac Izuchukwu, Ben Murphy and Nathan Doak to be given a chance. Instead, we have Iain Henderson (32) and Conor Murray (35) on the replacements bench, along with 37-year-old loosehead, Cian Healy.

This is surely the last dance for many of the squad veterans but, with Farrell away, Easterby is leaning on their experience and leadership to help him through the campaign.

Front-row depth a concern

Ireland, thanks to the Leinster production line, have no end of quality hookers to call upon. Dan Sheehan will deputise for Rónan Kelleher, against England, with Gus McCarthy the next man up. Such is the glut of No.2s at Leinster, Lee Barron is joining Munster next season, in search of more game-time.

Another injury set-back for Furlong exposes the tighthead side of Ireland’s front row. Bealham gets the nod but was underwhelming in the November outings and racked up a glut of penalties and handling errors. He will be desperate to show Easterby he can be trusted for the truly big occasions. Clarkson acquitted himself well in his Autumn Nations appearances. Oli Jager looks to have been bypassed, with Connacht’s Jack Aungier called in while Ulster’s Tom O’Toole finishes out his suspension.

Over at loosehead, it is all resting on Andrew Porter and his ability to do big, big minutes while maintaining a high standard. Leinster experimented with bringing Porter off the bench during the first half of recent matches, but Easterby is going the more traditional route. For Porter, that means a bank of 70+ minute games. The uncapped Jack Boyle should be capped, at some stage in the tournament, as Healy cannot go on forever. Surely…

Faltering form of the ‘other’ provinces

Leinster are ploughing serenely on, across all competitions, but the form of the other three provinces is a worry. Combined, the three sides have lost 23 matches so far this season. They are struggling in the United Rugby Championship but all have made it to the knock-out stages in Europe (even one-win Ulster).

There has been a lot of harrumphing about Leinster dominating Ireland squads, starting line-ups and central contracts but very few players outside of Easterby’s championship selection made compelling cases. Munster’s Thomas Ahern was unlucky, but his absence from the Six Nations squad was the only one that got fans animated.

Right now, Ireland are thriving or suffering off the back of a largely Leinster-based squad. It helps that Leo Cullen’s side have hit real form, in recent weeks.

Performing in a Lions year

The last time Ireland won a Six Nations during a Lions season was 2009. They have won five of the last 11 titles up for grabs but none of them arrived just before a Lions squad is assembled. Andy Farrell would still be expected to take a raft of Irish players to Australia with him, this summer, as touring victories over the All Blacks and Springboks will not be far from his mind.

Most of us could reel off a dozen Ireland players, starting with captain Caelan Doris, that are nailed-on for a trip Down Under. However, success in the Six Nations will determine how green tinged that final squad is.

The opportunity to become a Lion, or tour with them again, is heaped onto history staring Ireland in the face. Over in the NFL, no team has ever won a Super Bowl three-peat but Kansas City Chiefs are gunning for it, on February 9. Over the various iterations of the Six Nations, stretching back 142 years, no team has won the title outright in three successive years (France had a 1980s four-in-a-row but twice shared the honours).

If Ireland can get back closer to their best, settle their lineout wobbles and have those younger faces kick on, they should set that new benchmark. We may, then, have fans from England, Wales and Scotland joining the chorus of irate, rival provincial die-hards bemoaning the high volume of Leinster Lions.
