During his formative years, he played for Sussex at the under 14-18 levels and he was even asked to represent London & the South East in 2006.

In 2008, Joe Marler joined the Harlequins academy. After a couple of brief loan spells at Esher and Worthing, Marler became a staple of the Harlequins first team. By 2011, he was featuring regularly and he played a crucial role in helping the side capture their first ever Premiership title in 2011-12.

Marler stayed with the team for the entirety of his domestic career and even took over the club captaincy in 2014-15 while Chris Robshaw focused on his England commitments.
