Worcester Warriors add youth to recruitment drive with Will Reed deal
Worcester Warriors have made their seventh deal ahead of their return to professional rugby next season in Champ Rugby by signing Dragons fly-half Will Reed.
The 23-year-old becomes the second Welshman to sign for the Warriors, following Lloyd Williams, and only the second player in their 20s, following the signing of 28-year-old flanker Tim Antsee.
The former Wales U20 international missed the last two matches of the Dragons’ dismal United Rugby Championship campaign against the Stormers and the Bulls, making the last of his 50 appearances in the 57-24 loss to the Ospreys last month.
The 55-15 loss to the Bulls on Saturday concluded a season where the Dragons finished at the bottom of the URC ladder by a handsome margin, with only one win.
“I firstly want to thank our fans for all the support they have always given me,” Reed said after his exit was announced. “The atmosphere at Rodney Parade will always be special to me, nothing beats playing there when it is bouncing.
“I want to also thank staff at the club for their guidance and support over the years and all the team-mates I’ve been lucky to play alongside.
“I came through the academy system and in the senior set-up with several players who will always remain the closest of friends.
“Finally, my sincere thanks to the club for supporting and enabling me to take this new opportunity.
“I want to wish the Dragons all the best for next season and beyond. I’ll always remain a Dragon and supporter and look forward to coming back to show my support from the stands. SUFTMOG.”
Dragons head coach Filo Tiatia added: “I’ve really enjoyed working with Will this season. He’s a very good professional who conducts himself in the right way and works hard, on and off the field.
“As a product of our system, it’s been fantastic to see Will make over half a century of appearances for his club. We’re pleased he now has this new opportunity in England and Worcester are lucky to have him.
“Will is always welcome at Rodney Parade. This is his club, he will always be a part of the Dragons, and we look forward to watching the next chapter of his career.”
