Watson lauds 'crucial' Ford-Farrell axis

Owen Farrell

Anthony Watson has highlighted the value of George Ford and Owen Farrell to England, describing playing outside the duo as “a joy”.

Fly-half Ford and fellow playmaker Farrell, who has established himself as England’s first-choice inside centre despite continuing to wear the number 10 jersey for Saracens, excelled on Saturday as Eddie Jones’ side trounced Scotland 61-21 to retain their Six Nations title with a match to spare.

Watson, who was among the try-scorers at Twickenham on his return from injury, heaped praise on the pair and centre Jonathan Joseph, who grabbed a hat-trick against Scotland.

“Particularly our set-piece, the way George, Owen and JJ were able to create space and run through those holes was outstanding,” Watson told BBC Radio 5 live’s Rugby Union Weekly podcast.

“At the moment, it’s crucial having those two guys [Ford and Farrell] there. Their ability to pass incredibly well off both hands and square up defenders is key for us outside, to be able to free up space for us.

“It’s definitely a joy to be able to play outside those two, and JJ has got all the skills as well, in terms of distribution, so he can step up when needed.

“Myself, Browny [Mike Brown], Jack [Nowell], Elliot [Daly] and Jonny [May] have really enjoyed playing outside them.”

England visit Ireland on Saturday looking to complete a second successive Grand Slam and set a new record for the most consecutive wins by a tier-one Test nation.

And Watson will hope to earn a starting berth after impressing as an early replacement for the injured Daly last weekend.

“Injuries are frustrating at times, so to be out for 15-16 weeks was a bit of a battle. But to be able to come back, play at Twickenham and score a try was unbelievable. It was an amazing feeling for me,” added the Bath back.
