Tony Brown to jump ship from Springboks to All Blacks

Tricker I can agree on. Kirk maybe a CEO, but knows squat about coaching in the modern era.

Anyhow it is done. Time will tell if it was the right call. I don’t like Kirk, he comes across as a little guy feeling he has to assert himself all the time.

Doesn’t really mater if you improve/invest coach to imrpove aus sides or draft to improve them which results in coachs wanting to coach competitive teams.

An Eight team NPC is the perfect size domestic competition for NZ. The problem Australia faces is a problem that it has faced for all of its modern history. The tyranny of distance. The tyranny of distance makes professional rugby an expensive proposition. The tyranny of distance has meant that whilst NSW and Qld were the traditional powerhouses of Rugby in Australia the rest of the country broadly speaking played another sport entirely. Super Rugby ever since its inception has been trying to square this circle. The old fashioned state based system, a by product of the colonial era might suit cricket but it doesn’t suit a football code trying to grow a national footprint. As I see it. Rugby needs to mirror NZ’s NPC. Create a national competition based not around some historic happenstance but where Rugby’s market actually exists or seeks to be. An Eight team based competition featuring 2 Sydney based teams, North and South of the Harbour. 2 Brisbane based teams and 4 others.

Rugby could then supplement this concept with cross tasman fixtures, state of origin fixtures etc as needs or the market dictates. There would be no shortage of product to sell to the media but the biggest selling point in any negotiations surely would have to be the concept of a national competition full of rivalry’s, tribalism etc scheduled at a time and a place that suits its market and not someone else’s. Cross Tasman fixtures would be the icing on the cake not the cake itself.

After Canes lost to the Chiefs I can easily still see one of these two beating them in a Final. There are enough tests throughout SR sides for the Canes but these two can bring everything.

Blues to give the Canes one more prep for it, its the Blues only chance.

BTW when you say fit it times itself before the June/July tests and then we have the international series after.

NPC has always been number 1 for me so can understand if that’s the “fit” SR doesn’t fill for you.

Yeah he has done well with a team lacking in AB fire power. Will give the Chiefs a run. And Cahill went into lock, Hannah to blindside and Gardiner (sp?) to 7 I think.

Yeah I’ve always thought it was a bit weird but then they’re mostly frankenstein sides on this side of the tasman so🤷‍♂️kinda fits. It could have a real, authentic name when it finds what it wants to be lol

This will be a cracker of a game. The Blues defence has been on song for most of the season so not expecting a blow out. Looking forward to seeing if Love can keep going with the defence of the Blues and if he can control the game like he did last week.

No I didn’t notice that. I saw Cahil was on but not that he came on for CLW. That’s interesting, I wonder how much that was caused by the injury, and what would have happened otherwise.

I still don’t understand the desire to draft as solving the problems of poor coaching, poor pathways and no development. Australia has tried to solve its rugby issues with league imports and older foreign players who don’t get a gig in their home country looking for some sort of immediate solution to a problem that they need to resolve themselves. Having a draft might get some EX ABs and others into some teams, but it will only paper over the cracks of poor pathways and development and like the import of league players will ultimately fail if the core issue aren’t addressed.

Exactly. I’m not saying it can’t expand either, I’m just saying it needs to stick to a foundation of a primarily domestic league with some crossover, and you’re simply saying “explore crossover when something stuff time is right” type thing. Make the plan now and stick to it.

Yeah 😂, I hesitated to mention the wet conditions JW but I couldn’t help myself. Maybe I just want a few more day fixtures. I must say though. It is great that NZ has two indoor stadia. The one in Christchurch is a real game changer. No doubt this will help both the attendance and the spectacle. It already has of course. We just need one for Canberra now. I think I mentioned it because I was comparing it to the fast conditions at this time of year in Japan. The Japanese one league is I think a pointer in the right direction for Super Rugby. I don’t even speak the language but it’s on a similar time zone as Sydney and I love it. I find it a real revelation. I actually tried to get to a game in Tokyo in February but got the times wrong and ended up getting to the ground somewhere in the middle of the second half. Perhaps its time we changed the name of the competition. “Super” is a bit tired. Kind of bombastic for a tournament struggling and a bit too American for my liking. I’m over all these one size fits all names. I like to know where the team is based. They don’t call Man United, Lancashire sharks do they ? Why should we ? Even my local laundrette girl from Thailand knows them as Man U.

Easy answer mate, the coaching in Japan is superior to the coaching in Australia. Australia needs to sort its own issues out and stop wasting time and money looking for the “Golden Egg” that’ll make everything better without any work. Develop good pathways for players and coaches so that the game can develop. Stop wasting money on league players who are crap at rugby and focus on the long game. Until that happens the game will continue to suffer here.

Pretty happy with the development of coaches in NZ. The Canes are developing a few and certainly Corey Jane seems to be growing in stature, The Chiefs have Jono Gibbs and have also brought in some young ones. The Crusaders stable is pretty good and both Otago and the Blues have got young ones coming through. I think some of the newbies will need to go off shore at some stage so they can develop further but it is looking pretty good.

While a lot of ex players have gone on, for me there were a few who moved too far too fast and then crashed and burned. There’s a huge difference from being a good player to being a good coach and NZR needs to ensure they have the development pathways needed for them. Going ok for now but like everything needs to be reviewed and challenged.

It’s engineered Franchise rugby designed to be test match level. Basically coined from NFL and the SuperBowl I’d imagine.
