Liam Barry’s Australian Sevens side were on fine form on Day One of their home HSBC SVNS Series in Perth, where they went three-from-three to book their place in the semi-final on Sunday evening.

The victory over Great Britain, thanks to a late miracle try from Hadley Tonga, was an important one for not only the hosts, but across-the-ditch rivals the All Blacks Sevens too.

Tonga’s late try meant Tomasi Cama’s All Blacks Sevens side progressed through to Perth’s semi-finals, where New Zealand will take on Fiji before Australia takes on South Africa.

Great Britain went down to six players with less than a minute to play in the final pool match, after a yellow card to Charlton Kerr gave Australia the opportunity to ice the game at HBF Park in Perth.

Australia took the quick tap, spreading the ball wide to where the extra man was, before Tonga picked up the ball from an offload in midfield, before sprinting towards the corner.

Multiple Great Britain defenders were chasing, but their effort in stopping Tonga was unsuccessful as the youngster acrobatically dived to the corner, placing the ball down, giving Australia the all-important victory.

After the match, Tonga said that he had to pin his ears back, as the defensive pressure was there from Great Britain.

“I had to score in the corner. Getting pressure from the inside, I couldn’t step in. Practising all my finishes in the green room, I knew I had confidence that I could dive and score that try,” Tonga said post-match.

For the 20-year-old rising star, it’s a full-circle moment, as Perth was the SVNS Series where he made his debut last season.

“It’s hard to explain [the emotions], just the pure adrenaline that comes from after that, especially being down by just a small margin. It means a lot to all the boys.

“I’m grateful to be here. I debuted at the same time here last year in the grand final against Argentina. Perth just feels very special to me, especially coming from a young age.”
