It will sound harsh but he’s actually the heir apparent to Daly’s bench spot at the moment. That’s the exact spot he looks destined to fill at this stage.

He’s been working with the team for over 10 years and does quite a bit of work with the younger back row players.

I’m aware he’s not a “coach” currently, but England already have a scrum coach (Harrisson) and a lineout coach (Borthwick) and two contact skills coaches (McGuigan & Strawbridge). So what job is el-Abd doing currently? Presumably its mostly mentoring work, and acting as an assistant during lineout & contact training. Don’t see why Hill couldn’t do that?

Was a silly appointment right from the start… Borthwick seems only to be capable/willing to bringing in coaches with less experience than himself. England are starting to look good and in Lee Blackett they've clearly got a gem but they've got a huge lack of experience across the coaching setup and it's taken a couple of years of fumbling around before they've found a direction.

Yes, EARL is certainly the ENG starting 8 at the moment and I agree they are two very different style of players.

Henry’s game really does suit a bit more space, so you get the best return at the end of games from him but as you say, that can also become a curse. Just look at Kwagga, although he is never the same player as a starter.

I think the challenge they face is they have a bit of indecision in the starting line up, where we are quickly running out of games to test players (and combinations) and you also need to give some of the youngsters like Atkinson, Dingwall, Ojomoh, Calouri & Hendy some game time before RWC 2027.

There is an argument to say we are probably 6-12 months behind where we wanted to be but they have the players, it’s just a case of piecing it all together to get the preferred outcome.

Yep it’s a huge project but to attract one of the top coaches they’ll need a profile where they can reasonably expect to win 50% of their games…

Remember Eng were coming off a loss to Ireland and the three sevens was in its infancy at the time. Eng has improved more than France in the meanwhile.

A good contest to watch but that wasn’t a very good team performance from Bath and full credit to Toulon who were deserving winners.

Toulon front 5 set the platform at scrum & lineout and their back row made a mess of the breakdown and we failed to play with our normal level of control. We certainly missed STUART (on the bench), EWELS (line-out) and SPENCER (control). I think we suffered from a bit too much rotation but Toulon had to win that game to stay alive, which was reflected in their play.

Earl and Pollock are not really the same kind of player even though both are basically 7’s who can play 8. You would not want to load Pollock with 20 carries per game mostly into a hard one-out D. Earl can manage it.

I would not say it is black and white as that P.

For example you could play either of the 10’s with George Furbank, and in the centres I think they will also consider Lawrence-Slade [a proven combo] and tinker more with Lawrence-Freeman.
