Tom Wright is the latest Wallaby to re-commit to Australian Rugby through until the 2027 World Cup on home soil, with the outside back penning a three-year contract extension with Rugby Australia and the ACT Brumbies until the end of 2028.

Wright joins other Wallabies such as Jake Gordon, Fraser McReight, Matt Faessler, Harry Wilson, Jeremy Williams and Lukhan Salakia-Loto by penning new deals with Australian rugby, which comes as a major boost to the national team.

It was reported that NRL and overseas clubs had been interested in signing Wright.

After graduating from St Joseph’s Hunters Hill as a schoolboy fly-half in the First XV, Wright went to the NRL before returning to rugby union ahead of the 2019 Super Rugby season. Wright has since become a key member of the Brumbies, having started 11 games this season.

Under coach Joe Schmidt, Wright enjoyed another promising season in Wallaby gold in 2024, having scored six tries in 12 starts at fullback. After Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii was named in the squad for the Spring Tour, Wright made a statement with a hat-trick against Wales in Cardiff.

“I’m extremely happy to have my long-term future secured here in Australia and with the Brumbies in Canberra,” Wright said in a statement.

“As a kid, all I ever dreamed of was representing the Wallabies and with the milestones coming up over the next few years, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be playing my rugby.

“I feel I’ve got a lot of growth still in me as a player and I’ll be continuing to work hard to hopefully contribute to success with the Brumbies and the Wallabies.”

Wright was part of the Brumbies team that won Super Rugby AU in 2020, and was rewarded with a Test debut later in the year by national coach Dave Rennie. Taking on the All Blacks at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, Wright scored with his first touch as a Wallaby.

Fast forward to now and Wright is tipped to play a big part in the upcoming British & Irish Lions Series, with many tipping the 27-year-old to start at fullback for the Wallabies, although Suaalii has played a lot at No. 15 for the NSW Waratahs in Super Rugby Pacific.

In an outside backs trio that includes Corey Toole and Andy Muirhead, Wright has continued to impress at club level with the Brumbies and has been named to start for a 12th time in 2025 when the men from Australia’s capital host the Queensland Reds on Saturday.

“Tom has developed into an excellent outside back and we are happy to have come to an agreement to keep him in Australian Rugby for a further three years, taking him beyond the home Rugby World Cup in 2027,” Rugby Australia’s Director of High Performance, Peter Horne, explained in a statement.

“He has established himself as a consistent and popular member of the Wallabies squad and we feel he is entering the prime of his career as a Test player, which is exciting for supporters of Australian Rugby with the significant milestones on the horizon.”

ACT Brumbies head coach Stephen Larkham added: “Tom has been one of our standout players for the last couple of seasons.

“He is a big part of this club and brings with him a huge amount of leadership on and off field. It’s wonderful news to have him re-sign with the Brumbies for another three years.”
