Wallaby Jordan Uelese banned for striking while England star is cleared
Saracens hooker Theo Dan has been cleared to play following a disciplinary hearing for his high tackle against the Sharks on Saturday in the Investec Champions Cup.
The England front-row was yellow carded for his high tackle on Makazole Mapimpi in his side’s loss in Durban, and while he accepted that he had committed an act of foul play at a hearing this week, he did not accept that it warranted a red card.
The independent disciplinary committee concurred, determining that the offence did not warrant a red card, therefore dismissing the citing complaint.
Dan will be free to play again this weekend in the Gallagher PREM as Saracens host Exeter Chiefs at the StoneX Stadium.
Montpellier’s Jordan Uelese, meanwhile, has received a four-week ban for striking Zebre’s Shilo Klein on Friday night in the Challenge Cup.
The Australia hooker, who was playing as a flanker on this occasion, escaped unpunished during the match, but went before a disciplinary committee this week charged with contravening World Rugby Law 9.12: A Player must not physically abuse anyone. Physical abuse includes punching or striking with the hand.
Uelese did not accept that he had committed an act of foul play that warranted a red card, but the committee upheld the citing complaint, determining that the offence met the mid-range of World Rugby’s sanctions, which has an entry point of a six-week ban.
The ban was reduced by two weeks due to the 28-year-old’s clear disciplinary record, meaning he is free to play from January 12.
