Edinburgh have confirmed that new signings Rhys Litterick and Charlie McCaig are “unlikely to return this season”.

The pair picked up injuries in Edinburgh’s preseason defeat to Ulster, and were expected to be sidelined for a while. The club have now confirmed that they have undergone surgery with the new United Rugby Championship season set to get underway on Saturday for the Scottish outfit with a trip to Zebre.

Tighthead Litterick, who arrived from Cardiff over the summer, ruptured his Achilles tendon in Belfast, while McCaig, recruited from Exeter Chiefs, suffered a knee injury.

Edinburgh’s injury woes do not end there, however, with fly-half Ross Thompson deemed unlikely to be available for the trip to Italy with a toe injury. With Cammy Scott also a doubt with a hamstring injury, fly-half reserves are running thin in the Scottish capital.

Elsewhere in the squad, Darcy Graham is expected to make his comeback in round two against Ulster, as predicted. The winger is recovering from an ankle injury sustained during British & Irish Lions duty in July.

Edinburgh boss Sean Everitt was hopeful that Graham would be passed fit to take on Zebre, but it appears the match has come a week too early for him.
