Toulon player ratings:  Toulon pulled off a shock 22-19 victory over Glasgow Warriors in the Investec Champions Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, dumping one of the favourites out of the tournament.

Toulon turned up with plenty of fight, but they did make it hard for themselves at times, giving away nine penalties alone in the first half. But they had enough power and class to get the result. Here’s how the players rated:

15 Melvyn Jaminet – 7
A difficult afternoon off the tee, landing just one of four kicks in windy conditions, kept Glasgow within touching distance. Looked exposed defensively for Glasgow’s second try, caught in a Glaswegian wilderness as the hosts scored in the corner. But he did contribute a key attacking moment, showing slick handling to release Gael Dréan for Toulon’s third try before half time and made a break to deliver some sustained second-half pressure.

14 Gael Dréan – 9
Two tries, both taken with real authority. His first saw him fend off Kyle Steyn with ease, while his second showcased his pace and footwork, stepping Dan Lancaster on a 30-metre run-in. Finished with two line breaks and six defenders beaten from seven carries—elite efficiency. Simply the difference.

13 Juan Ignacio Brex – 8.5
Produced the decisive moment just before the hour mark, carving through Glasgow’s defence from halfway for a superb solo try. Carried 12 times and beat four defenders, constantly asking questions of the defensive line. Also made 15 tackles in a tireless midfield effort.

12 Jérémy Sinzelle – 7
Didn’t dominate statistically with just four carries, but came up with one of the most important moments of the match – a match-defining rip in the final seconds to snuff out Glasgow’s last attack. Also contributed 13 tackles in a composed defensive showing.

11 Setariki Tuicuvu – 7
A clever, instinctive contribution helped create Toulon’s third try, producing a one-handed offload to keep the play alive when it looked dead. Very quiet elsewhere, in truth, with just two carries and two tackles.

10 Tomás Albornoz – 7
Nine carries and three defenders beaten show he was willing to take the line on, and he also made 12 tackles. However, he was sometimes caught in possession and turned over.

9 Ben White – 8
Kept Toulon moving with crisp, wide passing that stretched Glasgow’s defence. Assisted Brex’s try (although all the credit needs to go to the Italian) and made 11 tackles in a combative display. A needless 10-metre march for dissent was a blemish, but overall controlled things well.

1 Jean-Baptiste Gros – 8
A powerhouse performance. Scored Toulon’s second try, bulldozing through three defenders, and was immense defensively with 18 tackles. Also played a key role in shutting down a Glasgow maul before half time. One penalty conceded at the scrum, but his overall impact was huge.

2 Teddy Baubigny – 7
A real menace at the breakdown, winning two turnovers and consistently slowing Glasgow ball. Also made 16 tackles. However, lineout issues (33 per cent success before being subbed) take the shine off slightly, but the conditions played a part.

3 Kyle Sinckler – 7
Seven carries and 16 tackles underline a strong all-round shift. Showed soft hands in attack and contributed to a crucial maul defensive stand before the break. Solid and reliable throughout.

4 Corentin Mézou – 6
Seven carries and 12 tackles reflect a busy outing. Conceded two penalties, which added to Toulon’s first-half discipline issues, but held his own physically.

5 David Ribbans – 8.5
Led all players with 16 carries and added 15 tackles in a tireless engine room display. Played a key role in Toulon’s maul defence.

6 Junior Kpoku – 6
Showed his strength with a turnover at the breakdown, but his yellow card, part of Toulon’s ill-discipline in the first half, put his side under pressure. Still finished with 11 tackles and contributed physically.

7 Charles Ollivon – 7
Strange. Pure class at times, but was also uncharacteristically sloppy at times. Conceded three penalties, including a high tackle, as well as playing the nine and offside inside his own 22, and missed six tackles. Did make 21 tackles, but his discipline nearly cost Toulon dearly.

8 Mikheili Shioshvili – 7
A hugely promising display from the 19-year-old No.8. Carried 12 times, made 18 tackles and won two turnovers. His rip on Sione Tuipulotu was a standout moment, showcasing his strength.

Replacements
16 Gianmarco Lucchesi – 7
17 Daniel Brennan – 8
18 Beka Gigashvili – 8
19 Matthias Halagahu – 7
20 Zach Mercer – 7.5
21 Baptiste Serin – 7
22 Esteban Abadie – 6
23 Mathis Ferté – 6

I know it will never happen, but am imagining an universe where the RFU and the Prem revisit the overseas players rule … with Itoje out of form, I’d really like to see David Ribbans in the England engine room! Sinckler looked good too!

Gros 9, Ollivon 8 and Shioshvili 8 would be more appropriate. What a display by Toulon, written off by many of the English speaking media but they showed their quality.
