Tony Johnson weighs in on Jordie Barrett's position in 2026

DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND - JULY 05: All Black Head Coach Scott Robertson talks to Jordie Barrett and Beauden Barrett following the International Test match between New Zealand All Blacks and France at Forsyth Barr Stadium on July 05, 2025 in Dunedin, New Zealand. (Photo by Phil Walter/Getty Images)

During the 2025 International season, the All Blacks used six different midfield combinations, some of which included Jordie Barrett, who had just come back from a short-term playing sabbatical at Irish club Leinster.

Barrett, who is often one of the All Black vice-captains alongside Ardie Savea, was forced to fly back home to New Zealand after the Ireland Test in Chicago, after a nasty injury ruled him out of the final three games on the end-of-year tour.

The 78-Test experienced midfielder transitioned to second-five earlier on in his career at the Hurricanes, after bursting onto the scene as a fullback.

Barrett will return to play for the Hurricanes in 2026 under Scottish-born head coach Clark Laidlaw, who has recently appointed ex-All Blacks assistant and former Hurricanes head coach Jason Holland as the team’s new assistant.

With Barrett’s return, the Wellington-based Super Rugby Pacific franchise have also added Japan International Warner Dearns to their second-row department, someone who has made 32 Test caps for Eddie Jones’ side.

Long-time Sky Sport commentator and rugby pundit Tony Johnson believes that a move back to fullback for Barrett could be on the cards with the emergence as Quinn Tupaea and Leicester Fainga’anuku as options in the midfield.

“To me, it opens up the possibility of Jordie Barrett going back to fullback, because I think there potentially is one of the answers to this ongoing issue about the high-ball problems,” Johnson said on the DSPN Podcast with Martin Devlin.

“So to me, perhaps there’s a solution there. Do you maybe look to continue with that combination of Tupaea and Fainga’anuku because they’re very strong, very direct, and try and build better connections on defence.

“I think was one of the issues that they had, not just down to decision making in the moment where you ended up with two guys on one, that sort of thing.

“Wasn’t just those two, by the way. I’m not pointing the bone at them entirely. It was a collective thing. So yeah I guess that’s the wishlist, and I tell you what, a year when absolutely no one gets injured would be great.”

Johnson also explains that because of the frequent changing combinations in midfield for the All Blacks, they need to settle on a group to be able to get the best out of them.

“There’s been six different midfield combinations this year now, part of that was because was because of injury, because the one they used the most was Jordie Barrett and Billy proctor.

“But then Barrett got injured, the Quinn Tupaea came on. Well, I thought Leicester Fainga’anuku showed really damaging capabilities there,” the Sky Sport commentator said.

“So you think, well, okay, let’s just get this guy in beast mode, and he can be one of the guys that gets you over the gain line. So there’s some questions to be resolved there.”

If you were picking outside backs who were best under the high ball, then Jordie Barrett and fullback and Caleb Clarke one one wing would be our best options. Jordan really struggles under high ball IMO although he is a lethal finisher. Jordie at fullback offers a massive punt, solid defence and great under high ball but not as lethal on counter attack

Remake the Nonu/C Smith combo.

Fainga’anuku at 12, J Barrett at 13. Power, pace, offloading at 12; power, distribution and 50/22 at 13.

Fainga’anuku will square up the defense, J Barrett will pass into space or get a 50/22.

Instead of trying to make J Barrett a Nonu, use him as C Smith on steroids, with a boot.

Agree, or try (Jordie is not a very good Smith, as his actual rugby instincts are poor/lesser compared to his physical and skill traits) to.

Biggest issue with Jordie Barrett is that he has played 3306 minutes since early 23/02/24, with only an 8 week break between 25/01/25 and 23/03/25, which is well short of the break annual break AB's the supposed to have, and meant he had an 11 month season before that. It was no surprise that by the end of TRC he looked knackered. I fail to see how this is in the interests of NZ rugby, or the player. Hopefully the Hurricanes don't use him until well into March.

What’s “this”?

Also not surprising he and others overworked have broken down as well.

Tony, Jordie has the kick/pass/run skills, great vision, agility and game sense of a top test fly-half. Was it Jordie’s cross kick to Narawa against the Boks (if it wasn’t he’s definitely pulled that off in the past). He’s also got a booming punt, spiral up and under and for the line, and he’s also probably our best aerial exponent in the back field (where the likes of Mounga and BB used to be effective, before the change in the escort rule). If you put aside for the moment that he’s 6’5’’ (much taller than the usual flyhalf, although Prendergast and Rico Simpson are both tall) he has all the attributes for that position. Swap Jordie in for his brother. Razor needs to think radically to counter the big changes in the game. With Roigard and Jordie running the show, one huge left foot, one right, and the Bruise Bros (QT and LF) outside him, the ABs would be a worry for any defence. With Jordie at fly-half, squaring before he passes (unlike BB who simply drifts sideways) there’d be more room outside.

I agree that Jordie’s skill set looks very much like what you want from a top tier fly half. Was wondering if anyone was brave enough to suggest it. There was another AB midfielder who converted to number 10 and ended up being pretty good. What was his name again?

I thought he was very good at 10 vs France, yes.

I’d like to see that too GM.

I’m hoping Razor will build his backline around 3 Crusaders next season- Mo’unga, Fainga’anuka, and Jordan.

9 Roigard, 10 Mo’unga, 11 Clarke, 12 J. Barrett, 13 Fainga’anuka, 14 Tangitua, 15 Jordan

21 Preston, 22 McKenzie, 23 Tupaaea

JW 44 days ago

Amazing to think someone as into it as you SC still can’t understand the Mounga situation.

Richie will only be a Sader again in 2027! Next year is 2026!

Don’t think Leicester has the smarts to play 13. Also, terrible bench. Try Preston and Love? Or Preston/Faktava/Pledger/Ratima and Jordie.

Gary C 44 days ago

Only change I would suggest is Love at 10. Remember Mo’unga has not played test rugby for 3 years SC.

That bench has impact, they could go on at half time.

It would be worth trying.

Moving the best inside centre in the world to displace the best fullback in the world makes no sense

J
JB 44 days ago

There is no world where JB is the best inside centre. He is probably the best utility player in the world but he’s not even the best in any position in NZ. I’d argue that the biggest issues to the AB’s back line in the Barrett brothers. BB is a spent force and should retire. JB seems to demand all play goes through him which contributed to Proctors struggles. JB to the bench or if he starts, as much as I hate this, maybe 15 is currently our best option. Although he has no counter attack and prefers to kick much like BB.

Lol the best inside centre who used to be the best fullback and the best fullback who used to be the best winger.

💯

Yet somehow it would be the most All Blacks thing to do, it’d be Savea and Cane all over again…

The issue is how players strengths are used. Why did Barrett and Jordan look best in the world for their Clubs but kinda average in black this year?

J
JW 45 days ago

I really like a Leicester Tupaea midfield, Quinn reminds me of a mix of Conrad, Umaga, and Kahui rather than your Ma’a, Tuipulotu, or Laumape’s. I think he could really make a good fist of an International center, much has Kriel has done for South Africa.

He wouldn’t be an optimal option and ahead of the likes of Proctor or Ioane, but if he is to keep making the squad it is probably over a ALB in future.

Doubt they’ll move Jordie back to 15, would create more problems than it’d solve. Suddenly he’d be competing with Beauden, McKenzie, and Love for a spot, and what happens to Jordan? Move him to 14 and he’s suddenly competing with the likes of Narawa, Carter, Tangitau for a start. Leicester off the bench is working, why change what isn’t broke? Coaching is the real issue here.

J
JW 45 days ago

So much to question with that post Ice. I’ll start by asking what you don’t think is broke?

If I’m following what you’re saying I’d counter by expecting him to have more competition at 12, but yeah, hard to really reply to that.

O
OutRun22 45 days ago

It’s actually pretty obvious given he’s very tall and can jump high to boot (no pun intended). Given that we have fai’anuku who covers centre and wing and we have the power centre (of sorts) and late 2025 stand out Tupaea both of these can play at 12/13.

Why Nz Ab’s ‘top 15 side is building nicely. only at number 8 and 6 do we have a depth issue. No problem with Parker at 6 but Sititi at 8 meh he’s overrated at 8 then who? this is why ‘dumbdumb move like an ice berg’ NZRU needed to use Iose at 8 he’s the fastest loose forward in NZ faster than Savea he’s got power and explosion. why have they not picked him? It baffles the mind they pick the most ponderous hooker in nz rugby ‘McAllister. glad he’s been found wanting ffs how could they not see this before he? they pick the most unskilled slowest hooker over George Bell who’s as close as we can get the the greatest hooker ever in Dane Coles, he’s the closest to him. Bell is fast allusive has very good ball skills and getting better all the time.

J
JW 45 days ago

Certainly theres no depth issues, what youre saying is there is a standouts issue, which I agree no standout backrowers at all, none in midfield either (excluding injured ones).

why have they not picked him?

Why have they not picked any prospect?

glad he’s been found wanting

I think you’ll find the opposite, thanks to his scrumaging.

I also think you’re confusing Bell brothers.
