Scott Robertson: 'There's so much good stuff that we did out there'

The All Blacks‘ 33-19 defeat at the hands of England at Allianz Stadium was the team’s third loss in 2025, with Steve Borthwick’s side ending Scott Robertson’s hopes of securing a Grand Slam on this end-of-year tour.

Robertson’s side started the game on the front foot, getting out to a 12-0 lead after 19 minutes through tries from Leicester Fainga’anuku and Codie Taylor.

But from there, it was almost all England as the home side scored 25 straight points before the two teams traded tries before the final whistle.

Robertson, who was clearly disappointed in the post-match press conference, says that there was a lot of good in what they did against England despite the defeat.

“Well, they [England] just finished a bit more than us. I think we created a lot. There’s so much good stuff that we did out there, we just didn’t take advantage of it,” the All Blacks head coach told media in London.

“Our self control was really good in the first half and we had some really good opportunities, which we didn’t take.

“12 nil up, missed a couple kicks for the corner, and then we were trying to be brave and put them in there and keep the points and the momentum going, and we missed them.

“They get a couple of drop goals, come out and then a yellow card, games swing so quickly and we know what Test match football is like, and we just needed to finish more.”

For the past couple of Test matches, the All Blacks have struggled to come out of the blocks in the second half, after starting well again in London against England.

When asked about why they are struggling in the third quarter of Test matches, Robertson explains he’s still not been able to put a finger on where it’s going wrong.

“No because if I did, that wouldn’t happen, we’ve tried a lot at training and to educate ourselves as much as we possibly can around what it takes to keep that momentum, keep pressure on teams.

“Obviously, hasn’t happened so it’s a little bit frustrating, we’ve put so much work into it and it’s definitely an area of growth,” Robertson said.

Robertson’s side played England three times last year, two at home in the July series, before winning 24-22 at Allianz Stadium in November this time last year.

The All Blacks head coach believes that England have become more clinical in taking opportunities, which is where they’ve made the most progress since last year’s Tests.

“I think they’re good at taking opportunities, that’s probably the biggest thing that they’ve done, they were tough Tests last year, but they’ve taken their opportunities tonight, where they probably didn’t last time and we did in those small margins.”

Heard on SM that Beaudie played with a quad injury🧐 Now Razor’s picking injured players🤦

P
PMcD 26 days ago

If Razor thinks that’s so much good, then I would hate to see what a tired and underwhelming performance looks like, as he clearly has different standards to others.

The forwards are potentially better than 2023, the backline is substandard. Both sit with Razor and collectively it isn’t good enough. That would be a better assessment for where the AB’s are at the moment.

C
Cantab 27 days ago

Disgraceful to see an AB side sacrifice a 12 point lead and capitulate yet again. Several players and even the coaching staff are now on notice to get their acts together and rectify the areas of the game where they consistently fail. Can’t recall a season where the ABs have lost to 3 different opponents previously.

Take a deep hard breath Razor and try and be honest with yourself

It was a decent start with two well taken tries

From there it definitely was not lots of good stuff

In fact quite the opposite

England were always going to be prepared for this specific game and it seems we weren’t

Do not roll out the same side next week to let players finish on a high

Start the bench guys and add …sounds like a broken record now

Guys like Love

Tangitau and Fakatava offer more than Ratima and Carter

Start Taukei’aho with Bell on the bench

He needs to seriously think about with either Scott and Beauden are part of the 23 moving forward now

It’s time to take calculated risks. England got their tails up and the ABs were simply unacceptable yesterday

We’ve gotten used to Robertson’s post-match speeches by now — the ones that don’t mean anything and bring nothing to the table.

He’s a poor technician, and in any case a very bad communicator who doesn’t take responsibility.

The All Blacks were thoroughly outplayed yesterday, and they’re even lucky the score stopped at 33 for England.

I’ve supported this team for 30 years and thought I’d already seen the worst with Foster (before Ryan and Schmidt patched things up), but I think Robertson is even worse! Foster wasn’t a great technician, but he was a better communicator and, above all, he was appreciated by his players — a sort of father figure. Robertson, from what I see, is not appreciated by his players in the same way.

In any case, NZR has everything it needs to make the only decision that makes sense today: part ways with Scott Robertson. Keeping him just to save a few hundred thousand NZ dollars will come at the expense of sporting results over the next two years. We can already write off the tour of South Africa, which will be a guaranteed disaster, and as for the Rugby World Cup, let’s not even think about it.

The All Blacks won’t be capable of anything with this coach.

And if unfortunately they decide to keep him (which is still likely) and put him under the supervision of new assistants, there’s no guarantee it will work. It helped Foster, but Robertson seems to have an enormous ego and doesn’t look capable of questioning himself. It would be a bad solution.

Yes I’ve watched the ABs since the 80s and like you I wasn’t happy with the Foster era but he at least realised and got expert help in

That he got to and nearly won a final was actually quite a feat with 14 men

I do also believe the players REALLY liked him and wanted to play for him

They petitioned for gods sakes to keep him! Knowing Razor was probably coming in that is quite telling now when I reflect

We cannot ignore MacDonald and now Holland leaving too (yes Holland wasn’t renewed but he also made that call too)

Razor is dyslexic which also makes him very creative which is great but I believe he’s heavily neurodivergent with I have no doubt ADHD and I reckon undiagnosed autism- I have some knowledge in this area in my family

It explains the …what we see behaviour during and after matches and the so called rambling

If he is to stay, like Foster he needs help outside of his SR chums (Hansen seem a real issue)

But as above I don’t think he will and may need to be forced

It also seems many top coaches don’t want to work with him so it’s a very interesting time with a new CEO coming and Jamie Joseph waiting next door in the ABs XV

I do believe we have the players in NZ, in the two squads and possibly we have to relent somewhat on the overseas rule

Not carte blanche but selective

How good would Telea still be as one example?

it true the ABs could have won this, but the real truth is England were better and most of all wanted it more. Disappointing for a hard core fan like me but credit where credit is due. Beauden’s errors could be a sad end to a great career.

J
JW 27 days ago

Yup where is that fire that they brought against the last pent up English sides?

Razor talking like it was disrespectful to make changes last week for Scotlands 100th. Such a numpty.

B
B 27 days ago

The AB’s butchered some small margin penalty options and England were unlucky not to have won by a wider points margin than 14…

No excuses… the AB’s lost and George Fords masterclass redeemed him after his efforts last year…Respect.. England and G.F..

Anywho, there are a few fatigued and walking wounded AB’s so I expect at least 5+ changes being made for next weekends game vs Wales and Beaudy will be one of them… so DMac at #10 and for mine Rueben Love to cover off the bench…or not…

E
Easy_Duzz-it 27 days ago

The All Blacks didn't butcher nothing. Your boy B Barrett butchered it cause he couldn’t find touch . Not once , but twice 🤣 … now your saying dmac and love … like they're any better 🤦‍♂️🤣 …

Just let B Barrett carry the All Blacks to the grave …

Then mounga will revive the All Blacks when the king himself returns 😌

J

Try 10+

B
B A 27 days ago

10 is wide open imo somebody’s gotta grab it by the nutz this Super with errors that Beaudie and Dmac are naking Love is not really a risk and he is better at back than both of them and better than most under high ball should be on bench at the least

J
JW 27 days ago

Love should have been the starting 10 at the beginning of the season. It’s too late to think about that now. Look to next year.

B
B A 27 days ago

With better wingers and or acceptance that Love is fine to start at 15 with a Jordan move no more Leicester on the wing he is a 13 and or a 12 and or that bench guy , Jordie is the other lock in, QT and Proctor have had their moments nice hands today but defensively and punch both sides of the ball got questions not sold, Proctors workrate scramble high ball work did show up, Reiko defense speed size in collisions I reckon could still be valuable ….Ennor looking good but can he stay out of injury ward can say Lam find form? Tavatavanawai come back stronger?

J
JW 27 days ago

The first thing the back line needs is a strong carrier at 12 imo. Great if the they finally find a system that works and can bambozzle sides like they appear to be trying to but otherwise the 12 needs to carry.

Carrying from 13 is ok against weaker opposition but I don’t think it would have worked today for instance.

G
GL 27 days ago

Razor replace Hansen and other coaches who are out of their depth before you get replaced.

Still believe you can make it but after two years, you need to change something proactively (vs waiting for injuries and resignations)

B
B A 27 days ago

Reckon there is some low hanging fruit for ABs better aerial wingers Fihaki Nanai-Seturo JRK Narawa bit bigger and all can kick add in a Tangitau elite speed and Clarke a lock in at 11 when fit far more potent offering get more for less

R
Ron Burgundy 27 days ago

Clarke has shown how much better he is

Massive metres

Defenders beaten

Agree I think ENS is absolutely superb and offers far more than Carter

Carter started well but has been found out on tour

And of course if you want speed then it’s Tangitau

And possibly faster is his Highlanders team mate Michael Manson!

Narawa too as he adds guile

J
JW 27 days ago

You’re chasing fools gold imo, apparently Squidge has said no on is catching high balls these days. They had better tactics today around defending them, getting the bounce on a few and if someone just had of been able to follow Roigard a easy try from the england kick.

England did the same, but it’s just a lottery tactic for weak sides, hoping to get the luck of the bounce over the 80. ABs probably lucky england didn’t reap more rewards for some bouncings fall into the hands.

1. Razor is here to stay. so let's get behind him

2.No board reviews. In the new year Razor sits down with David Kirk for 2 days...no computers or power points. Just honest conversations and Razor understanding what is best for ABs from here. See John Kirwan chat with David Kirk recently. Razor has to leave his ego at the door

3. Start again with his coaching group. Apart from Ryan it's not working

4. Focus entirely on Springbok series.

5. An honest appraisal sees Scooter dropped. Ardie in

6. Get our young front rowers 20% better than they are now. A Mike Cron type is needed

7. Moaunga is going to be 10, but we still need a backup and it's not any of current options

8. Get the midfield stable and sorted. We are close there

9. Steghthen wings and pick only players who can handle high ball...Narawa, Caleb

J
JW 27 days ago

Are you talking about NZR bending to Razors wishes for a more open eligibility selection?

Ardie in? Dude Ardie needs to be dropped more than anyone. Handling high ball is fools gold. There is no one anyway.

H

his idea seems to be Richie Mo’unga saving the (AB-)world next year

P
PMcD 27 days ago

Pretty sad when the coach fails to take responsibility and say “that ones on me for getting selection wrong and we let it get away from us”.

I think he’d get more support from the fans if he was honest with them.
