The All Blacks react to learning they've replaced Boks as world No.1s

Put on the spot in the post-match press conference, the All Blacks gave their immediate reaction upon learning that they’ve climbed back to the top of the World Rugby Rankings after their 41-24 victory over Argentina in Córdoba.

New Zealand leapfrogged South Africa to reclaim the No.1 spot for the first time since November 2021.

Scott Robertson’s side only needed a draw to move past the Springboks after the reigning champions imploded in Johannesburg, throwing away a 22-0 lead to lose 38-22 to Australia. New Zealand’s bonus-point win ensured they took full advantage, tightening their grip on the rankings shake-up at the end of the opening round of The Rugby Championship.

Ultimately the All Blacks’ pace and power eventually told in Córdoba. After a gutsy start from Los Pumas, the men in black ran in six tries to three, their superior finishing and set-piece platform proving decisive.

The win marked their first time back at No.1 since November 2021, but Robertson downplayed the significance.

“It’s actually something we just learned, because you just told us,” Robertson said in his post-match reaction. “Look, it just shows how tough this footy is and how close it is, the margins.

“Argentina were great for a lot of the match tonight. They defended really well, they’re really passionate – just like the Springboks were too. And then it can turn on a moment: discipline, a card, a great play, two or three tries back-to-back can turn Test matches.”

The All Blacks next head to Buenos Aires to face Argentina again in round two of The Rugby Championship; and Robertson says his squad’s focus remains on the performance, not the rankings.

“We’re pleased with number one, but our sights will probably be more settled on next week’s match than on rankings.”
