Switzerland struck a blow for advocates of the Rugby Europe Men’s Championship remaining as an eight-team competition with their performance against Georgia on Sunday, before Germany hammered home the message by defeating Romania.

Having been beaten 110-0 by the all-conquering Lelos in 2025, Switzerland halved the deficit between themselves and their more vaunted opponents in Yverdon-les-Bains, losing by a much more respectable 54-3.

That doesn’t tell the whole story, however, as the Swiss, newcomers to this division last year, only trailed 7-3 at half-time against the team who have ruled Rugby Europe for the last seven years – and with eight debutants in their matchday 23.

“We only had four days training but the first half was very good, we played the way that we had prepared against a very good Georgian team,” said long-serving head coach Olivier Nier.

“But in the second half it was more difficult. At the start of the second half we had four penalties in seven minutes, and when we got the yellow card (lock Lilian Rousset), it was very hard having seven forwards against eight Georgian forwards.

“Also, our substitutes are not at the same level as Georgia’s. But we were happy with the spirit we showed and our performance, and it bodes well for the future. A lot of our players played for Switzerland U20s.”

“It was a legacy moment, to show our history, and that we continue, step by step, to keep moving up and be ready for the next World Cup.”

While the decision has yet to officially be ratified, it’s been recommended by the powers-that-be that the Rugby Europe Men’s Championship should revert back to six teams in 2027.

There has been an angry backlash aaginst such a move, with countries such as Switzerland leading the protests.

As the team that finished seventh last year, they and the likes of 2025 cellar dwellers Germany, would potentially be cut from the competition.

“It would be a crazy decision to change back to six, everybody is happy to stay at eight,” said Nier.

“You had Germany beating Romania, and we had a very good first half.

“For me, the most important thing is we will have the new Nations Cup next year, and the Nations Cup will totally change international rugby; it will be wonderful.

“You will have a real championship for the first time for the second 12 best teams.”

Switzerland have another tough assignment in round two, with a trip to Spain.

Spain are very fast and have the ability to put a lot of speed into their rugby, so we’ll need to be well connected (in defence).

“It’ll be tough but we’ll see what is possible,” added Nier.

Fantastic tournament and the new 8 team format is beginning to pay dividends with four very competitive matches at the weekend. With the likes of Poland, Czech Rep and Sweden also performing well and investing in the sport in the Trophy, it would be madness to regress now. Keep growing this beautiful game of ours, for my money the REC is the best tournament out there , don’t change it!

I played in the Swiss League in the 2007/08. Probably one of the most enjoyable years I have had as a player (and most of them were pretty good). The standard, I think, must have improved markedly since then as there were a lot of older ex-pats (like myself) involved but, even then, there were some very good local players and quite a few younger blokes coming across the border from France and Italy to some of the teams etc. It is not a bad place to live and work and rugby was a great way to see the country - my only regret was missing our away game against Lugano in the Italian speaking part of the country. It is a beautiful trip to get down there apparently and a wonderful place to visit (only 75 km from Milan too).

Too right, we should be looking to grow the game, not shrink it. With the millions spent on vanity projects, it is comparatively little to help support the tier 2/3 sides who will allow the sport to grow into the future.

There’s also the more practical matter of the German financial heft being very helpful for the TV rights, and the playing numbers at their disposal if they can get things right following in e.g. Spain’s footsteps.

Comments like this show the complete and utter fantasy bubble fans of the game live in. If the top tier-1 nations are all running the game at a financial loss, then how exactly do you expect any of the smaller nations to find the means to fund a competitive side?

Rugby doesn’t make money, and continuing to grow a financially unsustainable pro sport will only end up ruining the game further.

Antoine Dupont missing for now as Galthie names 33-man France squad

Well, he’s returning from an heavy injury, and still fresh compared to all the other 9 of top14. I know he made a super perf against Racing92 but, on the season ? Lucu, Le Garrec, Serin, Jauneau, Couilloud, and of course Graou did more for their teams. It’s “easier” for him to do ONE big perf, while all the other 9 were the best players of their team during the whole season, and he did that with a forward pack being a lot stronger and less tired than the Racing one.

Now had he played for all the season without a bulldozer pack like Toulouse one… maybe he would have being far less interesting against Racing92. I'm not saying is not a good player. Not at all. But, in my opinion, this season is really not the season to call him “best 9 in the world”. Not even best 9 in France… which, again, is normal because he was heavly injured, it’s even awesome is still capable of playing. And for these reasons, i'm thinking that Galthié should do without him with France group. A place in the squad is not a given, even for the former best player in the world. If another player with his number is generally better and in better form, he is the one who should be given the jersey. Dupont should take the time to really get back to full fitness (50’ by match with his club is not enough for international standards) before giving him back the blue jersey. + We need to stop that “Dupont dependence” or during the next big competition, *someone* is gonna destroy him. Again.
