World Rugby have announced their nominees for World Rugby player of the year, with Rugby Championship winners and current world number ones South Africa unsurprisingly featuring heavily.

Three of the four nominees for the award are Springboks – current holder and two-time winner Pieter-Steph du Toit, 2018 nominee Malcolm Marx and Ox Nche. France’s Louis Bielle-Biarrey, who won a Six Nations title this year and the Investec Champions Cup with Bordeaux-Begles, joins the South African trio on the list.

The Boks are also represented in the breakthrough player of the year category, with versatile back Ethan Hooker, who made his debut against Italy in July and scored his first try against the same opposition at the weekend, making the list.

Deservedly so. They are probably the second greatest rugby team of the modern era.

Hmm that’s a real tight race between PSDestroy, Marx and Nche, my pick is Malcom Marx, would be nice to see a prop get it so no problem if it is Ox and Love Pieter Steph destroy but he’s had it couple of times already but certainly deserving of it again

These awards are meaningless.

The real winner is rugby

LBB to win it. The same way France won the 2023 World Cup bid….

there’s lots and lots of whining in this comments section, and it isn’t coming from AB fans!

Consider how hard you have to work as a prop to be considered for this award. He is the player that opposition coaches spend the most time studying - he’s the obvious choice

Some of them only average 50 mins a shift and don’t have to watch their carb intake.

They get a handy enough time of it.

All would be worthy winners. Is it an international award or overall? Hard to look past BB with his performance in 6 Nations, European Cup and Top 14. Boks will take votes from each other though I'd love to see Ox win cos he's a prop, or PDSD cos he's so good but hardly did much at club level

Think this only takes into account international - agree LBB would be most likely winner. Saffers will be unhappy because they don’t watch “NH” rugby!

Ox. Not eve na debate to be had about. this BUT they’ll give it to the Frenchman.

No question about it, pitty its the first time ever that a prop has been nominated.

Ox righfully deserved to beone of the nominees the past 3 years straight.

Guillard should be in that breakthrough list.

f
fl 24 days ago

He shouldn’t, because players are only eligible if they have played less than 1 year of international rugby. Although by that metric Sua’ali’i also shouldn’t be included.

I guess difference is that Sua’ali’i made his debut last november, but Guillard did last July.

I honestly feel like Ox Nche should win it. No other player is as far ahead in his position as Ox Nche. He is the most destructive scrummager in world rugby and the loosehead everyone wants to have. His penalties alone account for a huge amount of Springbok go forward and attacking opportunities and his all round game including tackling, handling, even passing is world class for his position.

A few years ago you’d have had a point. I’m not so sure this year though, he’s been good, but not that much better than some of the other options.

I wonder if he’s been included partly because they feel guilty for not nominating him in 2023 & 2024.
