Springbok World Cup winner Jean Kleyn agrees huge PREM move
South Africa second-row Jean Kleyn has signed for Gallagher PREM outfit Gloucester ahead of next season.
The World Cup-winning lock will leave Munster at the end of the season, where he has spent the last decade of his career, to join what is increasingly looking to be a star-studded pack at Kingsolm.
The club have already agreed deals for Welsh stars Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake, and though Tomos Williams is set to join Saracens, former England scrum-half Dan Robson has also agreed to join the Cherry and Whites.
The 32-year-old has made 160 appearances for Munster after arriving from the Stormers in 2016, qualifying for Ireland along the way and representing his adopted country at the 2019 World Cup. However, World Rugby’s change in eligibility rules in 2022 – allowing players to switch allegiance and represent the country of their heritage after a three-year stand-down period – opened the door for Kleyn to represent South Africa, and was selected by Rassie Erasmus in 2023 before going on to help the Springboks defend their World Cup crown.
The lock had attracted interest from Top 14 giants Toulouse and Bordeaux-Begles before opting to move to England.
“I’m thrilled to be joining Gloucester next season,” Kleyn said. “It’s a club with incredible history and a passionate fan base, and the vision shared with me really matched what I was looking for in the next chapter of my career.
“I can’t wait to get started, meet the supporters, and give everything I have for this team.”
Gloucester director of rugby George Skivington added: “Jean is a player I’ve admired for a long time. He brings real edge, experience, and a winning mentality, which will be invaluable for our group.
“His physical presence and professionalism will raise standards across the squad, and we’re excited to welcome him to Kingsholm.”
Munster general manager Ian Costello said: “Jean is an exceptional character and represents everything that is good about Munster. JK has had an immeasurable impact on Munster Rugby both on and off the pitch since joining the province 10 years ago.
“A complete professional, JK is a hugely popular member of the squad and I know he will be hugely missed by the playing group and all of those who work with him on a daily basis.
“We will wish him and his family all the best and as a group we will be highly motivated to ensure this season is a successful and memorable one for JK and his family.”
