Bok-laden Sharks edge out Stormers to claim third successive win

Sharks made it three successive United Rugby Championship victories by beating Stormers 21-15 in Durban.

Tries from Ethan Hooker and captain Siya Kolisi, both converted by Siya Masuku, put them 14-0 ahead inside 17 minutes before Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s drop goal got Stormers on the board.

Leolin Zas crossed for Stormers to reduce the deficit further but Andre Esterhuizen went over for Sharks’ third try, Masuku again adding the extras, before the visitors were awarded a late penalty try to claim a losing bonus point.

Finau has more linebreaks because in the Chiefs attack he is positioned out wide in space rather than take the hard carries in tight as Blackadder does.

This skews the statistics.

And the majority of Finau’s highlight hits are on 10s not tight forwards.

Because of Razor and Blackadder’s close relationship with Crusaders for a decade, I got to believe the speculation that Blackadder, who is off contract at the end of this year, has decided to sign overseas in Japan, as he is 30 and had numerous injuries, and he informed Razor of his decision weeks ago.

Because based purely on performance in the playoffs, Blackadder has dominated his rivals at Blues and Chiefs and is clearly NZ’s best blindside.

Chiefs had a better squad than the Crusaders but they failed to execute their game plan in the finals, for third final in a row, under McKenzie.

Barrett executed his team’s game plan effectively but lost to a better team.. Big difference.

Aumua is the least accurate line-out thrower between Taylor, Taukeo’aho, McAlister, and George Bell.

Not sure Aumua will be rushed back to replace McAlister.

I think we’ll see Will Jordan and/or Ruben Love on the wing against France. Maybe Rieko Ioane too, although I don’t think that would be a good idea. Tavatavanawai can also play there.

As for Rieko Ioane, I’m quite pessimistic about him this year. He’ll need to show something different, otherwise he could eventually be dropped from the squad.

Proctor is pushing hard, ALB seems to be highly regarded by Razor, and the imminent return of Fainga’anuku puts Ioane in serious danger… I also see Jordie Barrett being tested at 13 at some point.

I am a little surprised they are only 2 deep at fly-halve?

If Barrett starts and D-Mac benches as a utility back, would they do the unthinkable and try to match a French 7:1 split?

I suspect this is the reason. Blackadder has a big engine, is everywhere, is reliable and makes many tackles (& had a very good game on Saturday). But he tends to die with the ball in contact, and there are others who are more dominant tacklers (Jacobsen, Finau for example).

Also the 5 loose forwards they have chosen are positionally well balanced - Wallace covers 8 + 6, Ardie 7 + 8, Finau 6, Kirifi 7, and Jacobsen 6+7+8. Blackadder I assume would have been competing with Jacobsen for the 6-7-8 cover role, and they obviously see a little more in Jacobsen than Blackadder there.

Isn’t it more likely that Wallace is there as an 8 + 6, Ardie as 7 + 8, Finau as 6, Kirifi as a 7, and Jacobsen as 6-7-8 cover? Or has the coaching team come out and said Jacobsen is there as a 7 & I’ve missed it?

Blackadder definitely unlucky, but… while he tackles & tackles, has a big engine and is everywhere, where is struggles is dominant carry (as you rightly state, Finau beats him there). When he carries he tends to go to ground pretty quick and often does not make gainline advantage. I wonder if that is behind their thinking.

I think the squad opens up for a 6-2 bench alternative, which has not been the case in previous years. A backline of Roigard - Barrett - Barrett - Ioane - Reece - Tavatavanawai - Jordan with reserves Ratima - DMac for example would be able to cover all positions, and allow the selection of a big forward pack with 6 run on reserves. Will be interesting to see if they go down this route in one of the tests.
