Second Leicester star snubs Sale in major boost for Tigers

Emeka Ilione has piled more transfer misery on beleaguered Sale Sharks boss Alex Sanderson after turning down the chance to move to the North-West to pen a new contract with Leicester Tigers.

The Mansfield-born medical student, 23, has followed in the footsteps of a trio of England stars, Alex Mitchell, George Martin and Chandler Cunningham-South, who have all opted against moves to the Sharks.

Lions scrum-half Mitchell decided to stay with Northampton Saints, Cunningham-South signed a new deal with Harlequins, and Martin has agreed to join Saracens, subject to passing a medical.

Now, Ilione, who was called into the England squad ahead of the Quilter Nations Series and combines playing with studying medicine at the University of Nottingham, is staying at Welford Road for the next three years.

The former England under-20 international openside flanker, who can play anywhere across the back row, scored his second try of the season against the Sharks at the end of October. And the news will be another blow to Sanderson, who said only last month that he has a massive budget for internationals burning a hole in his back pocket.

“We’ve probably got enough budget for four or five world-class international players. We’re looking for those players which have the biggest impact on the ball and maybe the most touches,” he told the BBC.

“You look at our squad and where we might be a little short in strength in depth; that’s where we’re looking to recruit. “It’s a weekly task and one that I’m quite enjoying in terms of meeting players and seeing how it all fits together for next season.

“I’m also aware that it takes your focus off this season. All the white noise can create insecurity with your own squad, which, I might add, I’m quite happy with, given our retention rate is at 95%.

“This is the 5% to add to the gene pool to take us to the next level, where we can be a lot more competitive at Saracens away.”

In other news Sale are about to confirm the signing of Joe Marchant on a 3 year deal.

That would be a really good signing for both Sale and England.

I don’t think he will make the ENG starting team (atm) but he would be a useful bench/backup option to Ollie Lawrence at 13. Glad he’s back that will be a good combination with Masi-White.

If the news about the big youth from Mansfield staying at Welford Road is correct, then that's made my day. He is going to be a Tigers legend.

Respect for the loyalty. Perhaps they are just hedging their bets on which club will be the 4th to fold across the last few seasons.

Its interesting to see that all of the players mentioned in this article are either staying at their current clubs or like george martin chasing the bucks to a rival club, non have said “ im signing up with the R360”

Has Tindall and his band of cohorts actually signed any players at all yet to their proposed circus?

Fair play for Sale going after some of these names, you can’t fault the ambition from Alex Sanderson but equally, it’s also pleasing to see some loyalty from these players back towards their own clubs that helped make them and the “big news” story is that Mitchell, Finn Smith, Cunningham-South and Ilione have all stayed with the same clubs, whereas George Martin appears not to have been offered a contract after injury issues.

Obviously a slow news day, so having to generate some excitement.

The news here is Sale’s lack of ability to tempt players after losing some huge players recently.

We have supposedly gone for - Martin, Ilione, Mitchell, Loader, Edwil Van De Merve, Dan Du Plessis, Dweba, CCS and Dan Kelly in the last 12 months with none being signed. Dweba, Kelly, Loader, Van De Merve, and Martin all signed for others.

Creating a negative story against Sale serves no purpose. All the players mentioned have very obvious reasons for not joining Sale with the possible exception of Martin who appears to be just chasing the highest money.
