Rob Webber believes Sale’s ability to challenge for trophies convinced him to extend his contract through to the end of the 2020-21 season with the Manchester club.

Webber, who joined Sharks from Bath at the start of the 2016/17 season, claimed there is plenty to come from a squad that currently lies in eighth place on the Premiership table and has reached the quarter-finals of the European Challenge Cup.

“As the squad continues to grow, I’m confident we can challenge for honours. I’m enjoying my rugby and I’m pleased with Steve Diamond and the coaches’ continued faith in me. It’s great to have signed an extension to my contract.”

The 32-year-old hooker, who had won 16 England caps, had an instant impact when he first arrived and he has continued that rich form this season, leading from the front and scoring six tries in 22 games. That strike-rate puts him third on the leading try scorers tally behind Denny Solomona (nine) and Chris Ashton (eight).

”I’m really chuffed to have extended my stay in Manchester,” continued Webber. “It’s a great city, and my wife and I really enjoy living here.

“From a rugby point of view, it’s an exciting time to be a Shark. We’re learning every week, playing some good rugby and the squad are gaining a real understanding of what it takes to win at this level.”

Sale boss Diamond added: “We’re delighted that Rob has agreed to stay with us for a further season. He has been fantastic over the last couple of seasons and has really come into his own since joining.

“He puts in a lot of hard work day in day out and is extremely committed to the club and our vision. He is an integral part of the pack that we are building here at Sale and the experience he has in the Premiership is second to none.”
