The 138kg lock joined Sale from their South African namesakes at the beginning of last season, but a string of injuries limited him to just a handful of appearances for the club.

In a statement released, Sale confirmed that “family reasons” were the cause of the 30-year-old’s exit, with his next destination yet to be revealed.

Roets is well-travelled so far in his career. Not only has he represented the Lions, Pumas, Bulls and Sharks in South Africa, but he has also had stints with Racing 92 and the New South Wales Waratahs.

The exit has come just days after Sale got their season underway with a PREM Rugby Cup victory over Bristol Bears at the Salford Community Stadium.

Sale will provide the Gallagher PREM curtain raiser when they host Gloucester on Thursday, September 25.

A Sale statement reads: “Sale Sharks can confirm that South African forward Le Roux Roets will leave the club with immediate effect after both parties agreed to terminate his contract for family reasons.

“The 30-year-old lock joined Sale from the HollywoodBet Sharks ahead of the 2024/25 season but injuries have restricted him to just four appearances including two as a replacement in the Gallagher Prem.

“Everyone at the club wishes Le Roux and his family all the best for the future.”

Sale director of rugby Alex Sanderson spoke highly of the South Africa when signing him last year: “We’ve talked about what motivates him and what drives him, and he said he just wants to do the hard work and make others around him look better. It’s not about the Hollywood moments with him and I like that attitude.

“I think South Africans, culturally and through their mentality, have something in common with the hard working, no-nonsense, straight talking northern mentality.

“He loves to bang hard and he’ll add that bit more weight and power to our pack. We’re really excited to get him here to see what he can do.”
