Quade Cooper has reignited debate around Australia’s fly-half stocks after declaring he is interested in playing at the 2027 Rugby World Cup, insisting he never retired despite taking up a coaching role in Japan.
The veteran Wallabies playmaker, now 38, was widely assumed to have called time on his playing career when he joined Japanese club Kintetsu Liners in a coaching capacity for the 2025-26 season.
But the 80-Test fly-half insists a Test return remains firmly on the table.
“The thing is I never retired, I just had other opportunities that presented themselves and at the time when I was deciding do I want to keep playing, I was very mentally tired,” Cooper told the Aussie press this weekend.

Cooper’s comments will inevitably spark discussion given Australia’s ongoing search for stability at No.10 ahead of a home World Cup.
“So am I interested? I mean, who wouldn’t be, it’s a home World Cup and I still know I can play.
“So, of course, I’m interested, along with every other ex-player and every other up-and-coming young guy. I’m sure that everybody wants a piece of it in some way.”
The timing is notable.
Australia have cycled through multiple options at fly-half in the last year, with Joe Schmidt using nine different players in the role before ending his tenure following the Wallabies’ most recent Test against Italy.
New head coach Les Kiss has named Carter Gordon, Ben Donaldson and Declan Meredith among his options for this month’s Tests against Japan, but he was unwilling to be drawn on any longer-term selection discussions.
“The first two Tests, I’ve got three 10s that will lead the way for us.
“Whatever I do after that is another question, but for now I’m just focused on what I have to do with this team, and it’s important that my team know that.”
Cooper’s declaration also comes amid reports that other experienced Wallabies are positioning themselves for a potential World Cup push.
Bernard Foley, who has won 76 caps for Australia, and 68-Test back James O’Connor are both reportedly seeking moves to Australian Super Rugby clubs ahead of next season as they attempt to force their way into contention for 2027.
