PWR results round up: Away teams triumph in thrilling round three
Round three of Premiership Women’s Rugby saw away day bliss, as all four away teams walked away with wins or points.
Trailfinders Women kick off the weekend with a statement win on the road, beating Sale Sharks 22-64. Gloucester Hartpury continued their winning start with three wins from three as they battled back to beat Harlequins 26-33.
Loughborough Lightning and Exeter Chiefs couldn’t be separated after a thriller in the East Midlands which ended 33-33, while Saracens comfortably beat Bristol Bears away from home by 12-33.
Sale Sharks 22-64 Trailfinders Women
Round three saw Trailfinders Women claim their first win of the season as new recruit Georgia Ponsonby’s early maul try gave the visitors the lead, but soon after Rhona Lloyd continued her try scoring form from the week before, getting Sale on the scoreboard.
However, from then on in Trailfinders never relinquished control as Abi Burton ran in from nearly halfway before scores from World Cup stars Fran McGhie and Meg Jones secured the bonus point.
Amy Cokayne responded for Sharks, but further tries from Grace White and Julia Schell increased the deficit making it 36-12 at the break.
Carys Cox got herself on the score sheet shortly after half-time, but Sale weren’t done yet with speedster Lloyd going over for her second.
Cox and Schell added more shine to the scoreboard for the visitors as well as Rosie Inman crossing to put the game out of sight.
Lloyd crossed over at the death for a consolation score, completing her hat-trick for the afternoon.
Harlequins 26-33 Gloucester-Hartpury
Whatever was said at the half-time team talk was enough to propel Gloucester Hartpury to a thrilling second-half comeback to earn a bonus-point victory against Harlequins at The Stoop.
Quins, looking for a reaction from last week’s heavy defeat to Saracens, were unable to prevent The Circus from clawing their way back into the game after building a 26-14 lead. Tries from Sam Monaghan and Alex Matthews brought the scoreline level.
The turnaround was then completed by Mia Venner who went over to seal the Cherry & Whites’ their third win of the season.
Loughborough Lightning 33-33 Exeter Chiefs
The third match of the weekend did not disappoint as Loughborough Lightning and Exeter Chiefs played out an entertaining 33-33 draw.
Sadia Kabeya was once again on the scoreboard putting Lightning in front after 10 minutes but DaLeaka Menin answered back for the visitors.
Lightning’s Alev Kelter handed her team back the advantage midway through the first half, but Exeter refused to quit as Maisy Allen went over and Liv McGoverne’s conversion levelled the scores for a second time to make the score 14-14 just before the break.
Exeter started the faster of the two sides after half time as England’s Claudia Moloney-MacDonald was involved in two tries within three minutes.
The winger scooped up a loose ball on her way over the try line before setting up Emily Robinson’s for the side’s bonus-point score.
However, Kelter responded once again with her second try, and a score from Lucy Calladine meant the bonus point was secured.
Menin then added her second try of the afternoon for the Devonians before Meg Davey crossed in the 80th minute and Helen Nelson’s conversion ensured the points were shared.
Bristol Bears 12-33 Saracens
Saracens backed up their impressive win over Harlequins last week as the north Londoners secured a comfortable win over Bristol Bears at Shaftesbury Park.
Ella Lovibond gave Bristol the lead early on but Saracens’ new signing Olivia Apps answered back for the visitors. Momentum was in Saracens’ hands as May Campbell crossed over after a driving lineout.
However, Evie Gallagher’s score and Keira Bevan’s conversion, reduced the difference to two points, but Sarries were not done.
In form winger Alysha Corrigan crossed over in the corner before Kelsey Clifford and Bryony Field added their names to the score sheet after half-time.
Zoe Harrison’s four conversions added an extra shine to the score for the Wolfpack.
