New Zealand Rugby confirms All Black coaching appointment process

New Zealand Rugby have today announced their process for appointing the new head coach of the All Blacks, after Scott Robertson departed his role on Thursday, January 15.

NZR Chair David Kirk, Don Tricker, and Keven Mealamu, who conducted the end-of-year review that resulted in Robertson leaving his role, will all be involved in the new process alongside interim CEO Steve Lancaster and a recently retired All Black.

The statement explains that the organisation invites coaches from New Zealand with international experience to apply, before the shortlist and interview process begins.

NZR have confirmed that the recently retired All Black who will be on the panel is yet to be decided, and will be announced in due course.

Lancaster, who has stepped in as interim CEO as the organisation searches for a new leader, said in an NZR statement that they are giving the process the care it deserves.

“The All Blacks Head Coach is an incredibly important appointment. We’ve started the process and are giving it the care and urgency it deserves to set the team up for success.

Today’s announcement comes hours after Wallabies head coach and former All Blacks assistant Joe Schmidt ruled himself out of the race for the vacant role, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Sources have indicated that despite being sounded out by NZR for the role, Schmidt will remain in his contract with Rugby Australia, “and will not be switching loyalties mid-[World Cup] cycle”.

Oh dear what a circus!! We now see what a shambles NZR is creating for itself. Their reputation is shot and it would seem that being head coach of an AB side in disarray with a world cup fast approaching is not attractive any more to any coach with aspirations of longevity. No sinecure is it??

So then take your pick from Mitchell, Cotter, Rennie & Joseph, assuming Schmidt isn’t interested.

Personally, this feels like it’s Mitchell or Cotter with Jamie Joseph as the assistant.

If AB’s want to win the next World Cup, they need to employ Rassie as coach

“NZR will invite New Zealand coaches with international head coaching experience to apply.“

The problem is that nations around the world no longer consider NZ coaches as good enough to appoint as head coaches. Looking back over the past few years there have been a handful of coaches fired for poor performance. You looking at Pivac, Rennie, Crowley, Gatland and now Robertson. Moore who also coached their women’s team was fired too. And these are the examples only since 2022.

Now if you look deeper there is only one NZ coach, coaching a NH club team in Europe, and this shows exactly what the North thinks of NZ coaches. They are not good enough. Rather what we are seeing is that NZ coaches are desperate to suck up rugby IP from the best coaches in the world by applying for assistant roles so that they learn on the job at a lower level of coaching. Maybe this qualifies as international experience in Kirk’s mind.

Haha what a joke, just pick some Aucklander or Chief and watch the ABS turn completely into the Rugby version of the Warriors.

David Kirk: We’ll cast the net wide

Requirements: Must be Kiwi, must have international experience

Net cast over Joseph, Rennie and Cotter.

Why the show, they know who they want, just throw some cash at them and be done with it.

What possible qualifications does a recently retired player, who still likely has friends amongst the senior leadership group, have in the selection of a head coach?

It’s bad enough that Mealamu, who has zero experience coaching at any level of pro rugby, is on the selection panel.

The inmates (NZRPA) are officially running the asylum.

We’ve had our disagreements about Mealamu conducting the review but I agree with you here.

It isn’t great that the appointment panel is the same as the review panel. With Mealamu and “recently retired player” it does feel too player heavy and lacking the experience of a coach. Get Henry or someone in but this recently retired player especially feels like a conflict of interest

Nah - they’ve just mixed up the press releases - this is the panel for the High Performance role - isn’t it? I mean you dont need an experienced rugby coach who actually has some background in rugby coaching on that panel….

Reads like a train wreck.

David Kirk, Don Tricker, and Keven Mealamu, who conducted the end-of-year review that resulted in Robertson leaving his role, will all be involved in the new process… and a recently retired All Black.

As a kiwi I’d like to see Shaun Edward’s bring his no nonsense style, he’s got plenty of experience, maybe not as head coach but his international credentials are excellent and his influence on the French team is noticeable. We need to bring some mongrel back into our game and I only see Kirifi with that kind of attitude at the moment .
