New Quins recruit Delgado absent from Pumas squad to face Australia

Just days after signing for Harlequins, and then starting in Argentina’s first-ever victory over the All Blacks on home soil, tighthead prop Pedro Delgado has not been included in Felipe Contepomi’s 32-man squad that will travel to Australia for rounds three and four of the Rugby Championship.

Delgado, who played 45 minutes of the 29-23 victory over Scott Robertson’s side, has been replaced in the squad by Toulouse-bound 20-year-old Tomas Rapetti, who is yet to be capped.

The tighthead is one of three new additions to the squad, alongside loosehead Ignacio Calles and fly-half Nicolas Roger, who has replaced the injured Tomas Albornoz, who only managed 13 minutes of the recent victory in Buenos Aires before dislocating his finger.

The Pumas will face the Wallabies in Townsville on September 6, before a rematch in Sydney seven days later. They will then prepare for back-to-back Tests against the Springboks.

“We closed out the year at home with a great win against the All Blacks in Vélez, which gives us a lot of energy for the challenging tour ahead,” Contepomi said after naming his squad (translated by Google).

“It’s important that over the next five weeks away from home we can continue to build as a team and grow day by day. We are very grateful for the support we’ve received over these past few weeks in Argentina and are confident we’ll find many fans cheering us on in Australia.”
