Mixed Lions injury update on McCarthy, Smith, Hansen and Graham
Darcy Graham will be left to sweat overnight after the British & Irish Lions boss Andy Farrell delivered an important injury update ahead of the second Test against the Wallabies on Saturday.
The Scotland winger will have a scan tomorrow morning on the left-ankle injury that could spell the end of his Lions tour after just 16 minutes of his debut in the 24-19 win over First Nations & Pasifika XV.
Graham needed to be consoled by Scotland team-mate Finn Russell, who made his way down from the stands to the bench after being forced to admit defeat on a brave attempt to play on after scoring a try on his Lions debut.
“He is devastated. To become a Lion and score a try as well, he should be unbelievably proud of himself. He is going for a scan in the morning, so we will see how that looks,” said Farrell.
Farrell, who said England fly-half Marcus Smith passed a head injury assessment, is still waiting to see if foot injury victims Joe McCarthy and Mack Hansen will be fit for the second Test.
Lock McCarthy, who was injured in the first Test in Brisbane, and Hansen, who missed the match, are yet to train this week but will be assessed ahead of their next training session on Thursday.
“Joe hasn’t trained so far with the nature of the week, which is a bit different. So we will see how he is on Thursday; hopefully, he might be in contention, but we will see.
Mack is progressing, but whether he is progressing quick enough, we will see towards the end of the week. We have got a day off tomorrow, so it gives us a bit of space,” he added.
Farrell is preparing to let some players not in contention for the final two Tests fly home tomorrow but isn’t ruling out calling for replacements if Graham or any other specialist position is ruled out of the tour.
“You have to assess how long it will take you to get someone over. But to get to this late stage and call for guys from the other end of the world and to get them here to cover or to be part of the matchday takes time.”
