Marcus Smith signed off for England duty in typically dazzling and inspirational fashion as Harlequins beat Newcastle 52-14 in the Gallagher Prem.
Tyrone Green also impressed, celebrating his 100th appearance for the club with two of Quins’ eight tries at The Stoop.
The full-back was a real livewire and inspiration throughout this contest, which piled on the agony for a suffering Newcastle.
It was an important win for the Londoners following a slow start to the season, whilst Red Bull’s major investment has yet to yield a Prem win for the visitors.
However, Quins bounced back from their drubbing at Exeter in style and had the game sealed up by the break as they led 35-0.
Newcastle’s defence had leaked 25 tries and 170 points in their opening five games and was similarly porous in south-west London, with Quins finding gaps and holes to rush through at will.
When Green applied the accelerator and burst toward the line he looked certain to cross for the opening try but lost his footing on the greasy surface and the chance went begging.
Moments later, however, Luke Northmore joined in a quick tapped penalty in front of the visitors line and came up to celebrate the opening try. Smith converted.
Green strolled through for the second try after 18 minutes, after Quins camped on the line, and moved the ball right for arguably the easiest score the full-back will get.
Smith again added the extras and his explosive break, throwing a dummy pass and bursting through a hole, finished with an offload to William Porter, who sauntered over untouched.
The bonus point was in the bag after just half an hour and was a contender for try of the season from Rodrigo Isgro.
The Argentinian raced onto a grubber behind the Newcastle defence, somehow managed to stop the ball going into touch by sending it toward the touchline and then scooped it up one-handed and dived over the line.
Green showed physicality and desire to complete his brace from close range on the stroke of half-time.
The second half began in the same manner as flanker Will Evans claimed the sixth try after Quins’ big men mauled their way over in the right corner.
Smith fed Cassius Cleaves to stroll in for another try while replacement hooker George Turner bulldozed over from close range.
Replacements Ollie Leatherbarrow and Murray McCallum charged over for late consolation tries but the visitors left the field heads with bowed, well beaten again.
