Kenya Lionesses announce squad for Spain training camp

Kenya’s Lionesses have announced a 14-player squad that will travel to Spain for a high performance training camp on 26 January.

This is a continuation of the team’s preparations for HSBC SVNS 2. Nairobi will host the first leg of the tournament before events in Montevideo and São Paulo in March.

Simon Odongo has selected his squad after an intensive block of training for his side. His team is also a reflection of players’ consistency after Safari Sevens and Rugby Africa Sevens tournaments at the end of 2025.

Sheila Chajira has been named captain of the side and Freshia Odour has been appointed vice-captain.

Stella Wafula has returned to the team fresh from taking part in a high performance training programme in the USA.

In Alicante the team will play a series of matches against Spain and Belgium.

Simon said: “The decision to base the camp in Europe forms part of the team’s wider performance strategy, aimed at testing combinations, improving match fitness and sharpening tactical execution ahead of the Nairobi leg of HSBC SVNS 2.”

You don't know who's been pressured to make themselves unavailable. Certainly happened to Pasifika players who have been unexpectedly selected and Aussies in Japan when they changed their regulations a few years ago.

Clubs weren't happy because they hired the athletes expecting them to be able to play during the window.

That's simply not true Nick. He continually played all five of them in the same match in the 2023 rugby championship and would have done so at the world cup if he hadn't made two ridiculous selection errors.

Not saying that at all! With only two clubs and their top players emigrating they, like Rassie, probably had little choice. I'm just rebutting the idea they've done well and are a great advert for selecting from overseas. Considering all their foreign imports they've underwhelmed.

Bath also thought they were close with Marcus around the same period but he also knocked them back to stay with Quins, which ultimately led to the Russell signing.

The 50/22 changes really played to his strengths, where he could pin the opposition wingers back and create more room for his attack but the removal of the screen has done a similar thing with his spiral bomb and tactical kick to contest.

Has certainly evolved with the times more than most.

I’ll never forget when Faz and his Sarries team put +70 points past us at The Rec. It was one of the the most perfect games I have ever seen a team play.

It was the best combination of attack & defence I have ever seen from a team. It was almost the perfect game of rugby from a side.

The two rookies deserve the call up and I hope they get game time. I think that Doak has a high ceiling and if he can ups his pass speed and decision making a couple of clicks to international level then it would be a great outcome. 3 starting SH in 3 provinces. Edogbo is a big fella and pads out the ‘row. I think we look light at 2d row so it is good to see him in there and Ahern as a hybrid, Beirne can’t (or shouldn’t) play every game for 80 mins.

The props will be a real exercise in adversity. Back row looks very much as you were.

Both very experienced. Cotter more so in terms of 6N / NH competition. If they could work together then they could bring an awesome blend forward power and all of field attack.

And agree re 6-2 - ABs need to go there to match intensity in third and fourth quarters.

I know you say “no-way” to this but a stint running Leinster, to then take over from Andy Farrell when the big job comes up would be the ideal pathway to the Ireland job and feels like the timing could work for ROG.

He would be a good fit with Quins but feels like a step backwards (with a smaller budget), so then opens the pathway as an assistant and there are not many vacancies with the RWC running so close,

I am a Cotter fan too. But disagree with your assessment of Joseph - he had two ABs in the Highlanders last year (from

memory) plus Tavatavanawai and a large number of newbies while Cotter had 6 and a large cohort of very experienced Super players. I also disagree with the suggestion that he needs TB - obviously a bonus - but his Highlanders showed how to use backs last year with Tangitau a true stand out. The ABXV performances also showed his ability to get the most out of players.

Yep, good points. Cotter showed his worth with the Blues and he can build on what Razor was trying to do. But Cotter made the mistake of sidelining Plummer who was way better suited than Barrett to the forward power game. I would like to see him (Cotter) in there somewhere too (without Barrett). Preference still Joseph if pressed - he has built his game around intensity and innovation which I think is what the ABs need most.

The consensus seems to be that once all these former England players headed across the channel, then that was it for the England careers. I guess for a bunch that’s true, but I do think some will return to the Prem. Both Willis brothers could come back and still be considered for England. I think Tom would be 32 for the 2031 RWC and Jack 34.

Spot on SC. We should remember too that the Boks are heavily reliant on some core players - Thomas du Toit and Louw were key to their tighthead success this year, in combination with key players such as Marx, SFdT, Ruuan, Lood, Wiese and Synman all of whom played in Wellington and Paris and except for Lood in Dublin. They have strong back up eg Eben who played in Paris and Dublin. But these guys and Eben were and are instrumental to their forward success.
