Perpignan have simultaneously announced that former Scotland captain Jamie Ritchie is out for the remainder of the season, and will leave the club at the conclusion of the current campaign.

After a year with the Catalan club, the 29-year-old is expected to return to Scotland to join Glasgow Warriors, citing a desire to be closer to his family as a reason for his decision.

Perpignan have three games remaining of the Top 14 season before they will have to play the ‘Access Match’ against the runner-up of the Pro D2 final as a result of finishing second-from-bottom in the Top 14 this season.

They will head into those final matches without the flanker, however, with the club confirming that he sustained a season-ending injury against ASM Clermont Auvergne at the weekend.

Speaking to the club after his exit was announced, Ritchie said that he is “really disappointed” to be leaving, adding that he has “loved” his time in France.

“It’s been a really difficult decision to make,” he said. “I’ve loved my time here in France. The people of Perpignan and the surrounding area have been super welcoming to me, the club have been great. But it’s a personal decision that I’ve made to be closer to my kids and to my family. I joined here during a really difficult period – the club and all the boys and the supporters have been amazing to me. I really felt welcome here, I really enjoyed it.

“The change in lifestyle, the club itself – I know it’s been difficult on the field at some points – but the support has been unwavering. USAP will always have a place in my heart. My primary goal is to make sure USAP stay in the Top 14, that’s been for the last few weeks what we’ve been striving towards, and I’ll do everything in my ability to make sure that happens. Like I said, this club means a lot to me and I’m really disappointed to be leaving but at the same time I want to leave it in a good place in the Top 14 where it belongs.”

Perpignan president François Rivière added: “Jamie is an exemplary player and captain. He has left his mark on the club through his commitment and leadership. We respect his personal choice, which is essential for his work-life balance. We will continue to follow and support him. Perhaps a new opportunity will arise one day.”
