Ireland dealt midfield blow ahead of Nations Championship

PARIS, FRANCE - SEPTEMBER 23: Garry Ringrose of Ireland shakes hands with Robbie Henshaw as he comes on as a head injury assessment replacement during the Rugby World Cup France 2023 match between South Africa and Ireland at Stade de France on September 23, 2023 in Paris, France. Ireland’s latest injury update has struck a pessimistic tone over the availability of Garry Ringrose for the Nations Championship, which resumes next month.

The IRFU admitted the experienced centre ‘is unlikely to be involved in the forthcoming matches against Argentina, Fiji and South Africa in Dublin.’

The 31-year-old has picked up a hamstring injury, with the IRFU confirming he will continue his rehabilitation with Leinster.

No replacement is planned for Ringrose, who has scored 15 tries in 75 caps for Ireland and has started eight of the last nine Tests, or Jimmy O’Brien and Sam Prendergast.

O’Brien sustained a concussion in Leinster’s 24-18 comeback win against Munster on Saturday and will follow a graduated return with the aim of resuming full training later this week.

Prendergast, who missed the URC interpro clash with a wrist issue, is progressing towards a return to fitness and will also continue his rehabilitation this week in camp.

With Ringrose sidelined, Bundee Aki and Robbie Henshaw will likely battle it out with Stuart McCloskey for the two slots in midfield.

Ulster’s new signing, Jamie Benson, is another option, although he has yet to win a cap and normally plays fly-half.
