Former Wales number 8 Andy Powell has many in his homeland scratching their heads after vowing to go through with a pledge to get the red rose tattooed on his chest if England win the football World Cup.

In the aftermath of England’s 6-1 win over Panama in the group stage of the FIFA World Cup, which confirmed their place in the knockout stage of the competition Powell tweeted “If England win the World Cup I will get a big red rose tattooed on my chest !! #genuine ?”

Powell fully expected England to get knocked out at the quarter-final stage, but instead they’re just two wins away from achieving the feat.

Gareth Southgate’s side face Croatia in the semi-finals on Wednesday at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain Powell confirmed he would go through with his promise.

“I will get it done. I’m a man of my word. I said this in the group stages and I’m thinking, quarter-finals England will get knocked out.

“I’m a man of my word and a proud Welshman, I’ll get it done.”

Despite the potentially imminent tattoo remarkably Powell is still supporting England.

“I think as a youngster growing up, Wales weren’t in these big competitions and I can remember Paul Gascoigne back in Euro ’96 with his miss (against Germany in extra time of their semi-final clash) and I was crying.”

“My mum’s half English and I’ve even got my father going down the pub for a few beers to watch them, so that says something. I hope they win, I think they will win and win the final as well.”

But Powell says he knows “quite a few” of his compatriots who want England to lose, but is urging them to get behind the Three Lions.

“I think it’s great for the sport, great for the country, we’re all British at the end of the day. I’m going to get behind them.

“I’ve been on a British Lions tour and you’ve got the Scots, Irish and English – everybody together.

“If you can support them I think everybody should change their views.
