The Hurricanes have confirmed the resignation of long-serving chief executive Avan Lee, ending a tenure that began in June 2015.

The Canes finished fourth in the Super Pacific regular season this year, having topped the log in 2024.

The Wellington-based outfit said Lee chose to step down following recent changes at board level and wider developments within the organisation, acknowledging that more than a decade in the role marked a natural transition point for new leadership.

Lee’s time in charge included major milestones and challenges, most notably the Hurricanes’ first and only Super Rugby title in 2016.

A statement from the franchise credited his leadership with helping steer the club through that period and leaving it well-positioned.

Avan Lee, for his part, said: “After ten years, I feel now is the right time to step aside and allow new leadership to continue building on the great work that’s been done.

“I’m extremely proud of what we’ve achieved together, and I want to thank our players, staff, shareholders, and supporters for their dedication to and belief in the club. The Hurricanes will always hold a special place in my heart, and I look forward to cheering the team on in the seasons ahead.”

During his tenure the Hurricanes say the club expanded their commercial networks both domestically and overseas, strengthened their internal culture, and built strong playing and coaching groups.

“Avan has been an outstanding leader for the Hurricanes and we’re grateful for his commitment to our organisation for more than ten years,” said outgoing Hurricanes Chairman Iain Potter. “He’s guided the club with integrity, professionalism, and vision through a decade of significant change. His contribution to our organisation, and to professional rugby in New Zealand, cannot be overstated.

“The Hurricanes Board and staff extend their sincere thanks to Avan for his service, leadership, and contribution to the club. We look forward to seeing him at Hurricanes HQ and at games, as a respected member of the Hurricanes family.”
