Hurricanes bolster coaching staff with Chiefs assistant Roger Randle

The Hurricanes have added Chiefs assistant Roger Randle to their coaching ranks for 2027, following the departure of attack coach Jason Holland to the Blues.

Randle will make the move from the Chiefs to the Hurricanes, having been the attack coach under both Clayton McMillan and Jono Gibbes over the past eight Super Rugby Pacific seasons.

The Hastings-born former winger said he’s stoked to be back with the Hurricanes, returning to the Wellington-based Super Rugby Pacific franchise where he made five appearances.

“I’m really excited to join the Hurricanes and work alongside Clark and the coaching group. To come back home to the Hurricanes is something my wh?nau and I are looking forward to, and I can’t wait to get started at the club,” Randle said in a Hurricanes media release.

Hurricanes head coach Clark Laidlaw said his experience with the Chiefs will be a “real asset” to the club going forward.

“It’s a hugely important and exciting appointment. We have some space for some coaches to come in, and to find a coach of Roger’s experience and ability, we feel grateful that he’s chosen to come here,” Laidlaw added.

“We’ve been an admirer of the Chiefs’ attack for a number of years. We know how hard it was to go up against them over the past few years, and he’s been a massive part of their success and their club.

“His Super Rugby experience, his coaching ability, the detail he brings, and the wide range of environments he’s coached in is going to be a real asset to us, and we really look forward to welcoming him and his family to the club.”

Hurricanes chief executive Tony Philp explained the 2026 Super Rugby champions went through a “thorough” recruitment process to appoint Randle.

“Following a considered and thorough recruitment process, we are pleased to welcome Roger to our club. We have full confidence in his ability to represent the Hurricanes, and we look forward to connecting him into our club when he arrives in October.”

Chiefs Rugby Club CEO Simon Graafhuis acknowledged the new Hurricanes assistant’s contribution to the club over the past eight years.

“Roger has been an outstanding servant of the Chiefs Rugby Club, both as a coach and as a former player. Over the past seven seasons, he has made a significant contribution to our success and has had a positive impact on countless players, staff and fans.

“Roger leaves with our gratitude and best wishes, and he will always be welcomed back to Chiefs HQ and region”
