I know people will always point at the salary cap . . . . But from a pure on pitch rugby view, there were an incredible team back then.

Totally agree and hope it will clicked ! Nevertheless, I still don’t know if their front row depth is sufficient… I think they may be crossing fingers for at least one loosehead to step up in the next months/year !

I know that you were promoting Charlie Cale but don’t you think that Les Kiss will be tempted to use the Red’s backrow ? Or would you go with a Hooper-Cale-McReight option with Wilson (or Valentini ?) on the bench ? I may be interested to see Wilson play 6 with a better ball carrier by his side, which - by looking to your stats - LSL is doing for the Reds (do you think a comparison can be made with the way Galthié is using Guillard as a ball carrier ?), I always get the impression that he is playing with too much pressure on his shoulders by being tasks to gain meters for his team… But maybe he is just not ready fo that level…

'It was personal': The Hurricanes win tasting extra sweet

The Hurricanes are currently the best team in this competition. Only losses were a lucky win for the Chiefs and a loss away to the Drua at a venue loaded in the favor of the home side. Their match against the Crusaders tomorrow is pivotal for both sides. Crusaders need the win to hold on to their top 6 chances, the Hurricanes need the win to maintain the lead on the log. Both sides have game breakers but the Canes have more of them and on form should prevail.

Maybe NZR think that they have other strong options in that position and that they can overlook him in order to not appear powerless if they finally failed to retain him ? It still is a real disappointment for New Zealand and even for Super Rugby… Maybe, if Newcastle does not really suceed…

My personal preference would go to Taumoefolau but, ofc, all of them would have to prove everything at international level. I really hope Rennie will use the fact that WC will be the only thing he will truly be judged on to try different players this summer and vs SA.

We won’t really know the answer to this until November and even then, one might be injured as usual. France will have multiple ways to play at the next World Cup though, which can only be a positive thing.

He got his debut in November against Fiji, came off the bench for 17 minutes. Did alright in that cameo I thought. He’s absolutely massive, 6’9 and 133kg. I think he has potential but perhaps his activity level is not as high as someone like Staniforth. I would like to see him travel in July.

There are genuine concerns over Beauden Barrett's All Black days

Sadly BB has had his day and his form is in decline now. There are several contenders for his position and the ABs need a pivot who know does not surrender hard won possession or to make frequent dumb plays for the opposition to capitalise on.

Not really. The game has gotten a lot faster in the last five years and seven has seen a huge explosion of talent at the spot in England. Back in late Stuart Lancaster/early Eddie era Eng were playing Hask and Robbo as hybrid 6’s and 7’s.

Indeed the Sarries tight five was just ridiculous at that time - Itoje, Kruis, Skelton, Nick Isiekwe, Joel Kpoku, then you could drop down to Michael Rhodes even after that. Nuts.

Interesting to see what conidtion he returns in too. Rennie will want him playing at 130-135k’s, Top 14 quite happy for their #3’s to expand to 140-150!

A lot will depend on whether they chose to continue with playing off Jalibert at 10 or go back to Dupont at 9 and Ntamack at 10. If the former they will not prob need another Willemse/Taofifenua type and be freer to pick a Guillard/Ollivon type combination, or similar. I’d keep Meafou for becnh impact in any case.

Interested to know more about Jimi Maximin. H’es cleaely huge but is he a good Test prospect?

JAS at 15, Jorgo 11 and Marky 14, tho you could easily swap Marky and Suaalii around. Tom wright is still good and might be viewed as potential cover at 10 with the restriction of number in a RWC squad.

And yes, start with Tate-Carter and go from there!

Yep he could go DMac-Quinn tho I don’t see much future in that combo. If Jordan stays at full-back you could look at all of Taumefolau, Tavatavanawai and Tangitau on the right wing. I’d also be doing all I could to stop Fineanganofo going to the UK.

I get it and hope it will be the case, I just fear that the current All Black environment where everyone should be given a chance to fight for a spot may not be the best place to look after such a symbiosis with Love and Mo’unga sharing the starting place and DMac accepting to be limited to the supersub role… I still hope it will clicked because it could be so great to watch… Do you think there is still a possibility that Rennie could choose to start DMac at 10 and Tupaea at 12 ?

Thus, who would you pick as a right winger if Jordan is still seen as a FB ?

With Suaalii at 15 or Jorgensen ? I think their backthree is far from being an area of concern for the Aussies, nevertheless, they could have some difficulties to find the right combination... Do you think that his goalkicking gives Sid Harvey a chance to play a part in their WC squad ? Are you writing off Tom Wright due to his recent injury ?

I suppose that the midfield is a less concerning matter than their 9-10 duo since Ikitau can be trusted and Crichton could be an incredible addition to their squad, however, having so many uncertainties about their starting team when others top nation are more focused on the optimization of their bench is really worring…
