Historic try 'so irrelevant' for departing Sarries wing Ashton

Saracens wing Chris Ashton

Chris Ashton said the prospect of becoming the leading try-scorer in European Champions Cup history is “so irrelevant” as he prepares for his final game of the tournament in a Saracens shirt when they face Clermont Auvergne in the final.

Ashton will leave Sarries to join Toulon at the end of the season and the wing is aiming to sign off in style by claiming back-to-back European and Premiership titles.

The former Northampton Saints flyer matched Vincent Clerc’s European record of 36 tries with a double over Glasgow Warriors at the quarter-final stage last month.

Ashton can break new ground in the showdown at Murrayfield on Saturday, but the rugby league convert said retaining the title is all that matters to him.

“It [the record] is so irrelevant it actually doesn’t matter at all,” said Ashton. “It is a final – it doesn’t matter – we have just got to win.

“But it is definitely nice to be up there. I always judge myself as to if I have made an impact on a game – and my job is to score tries.

“I hope there are a couple more yet but I am not concentrating on getting the next one this weekend, I think I have got a good few years to come.”

Scotland’s headquarters has proved to be a happy hunting ground for Ashton, who has been prolific since joining the English and European champions five years ago.

He added: “I have a couple of good memories of playing up there – beating Scotland with England and Edinburgh with Sarries a few years ago – and those were good experiences.”
