Exeter Chiefs boss Rob Baxter has backed Sam Harris to regain the form that made him one of the most exciting full-back prospects in the country after making him his seventh signing ahead of next season.

Former England U18 and U20 international Harris, 22, has played only 11 games in three years after being plagued by serious injuries, but it has not stopped Baxter from rolling the dice, and he will join Bath’s team-mate Will Butt at Sandy Park.

Harris, who was educated at Millfield and the University of Bath, was Bath’s Breakthrough Player of the Year in July 2023 made his last appearance against Bedford Blues in the PREM Rugby Cup in February 2025, when he suffered a serious knee injury.

Full-back has been a problem area for the Chiefs this season, with Tommy Wyatt and Josh Hodge, who is leaving for Newcastle Red Bulls, injured, so they have asked Olly Woodburn to fill in, but Baxter says it’s an area he wanted to strengthen.

“We wanted to see what was on the market, and our preference would be a younger EQP player. Sam fits the bill. You know, he’s been a little bit unfortunate with injuries. And I know that can always be a concern.

“We spent a bit of time doing some proper due diligence. He was playing 20-odd games a season until he picked up an injury. Then, immediately in the second game, he gets back, he picks up a second injury, and that can happen,” said Baxter.

Baxter says it’s not the first time he has signed a player who has struggled with injuries but has been rewarded when they regained form and fitness.

“We’ve signed young players, particularly in a similar position. Johnny Hill was in a similar position with a bit of an injury. Sam Skinner, as well, sometimes it takes a bit of rehab and a little bit of time to get them fully ready.

“But often that’s just a little bit of bad luck when you’re a young player, and you get back-to-back injuries. You know, the reality is those things are sorting themselves out now with time and with operations, et cetera.

“And pre that, you know, he was one of the best young talents in the country. He’s got good second receiver skills, good pace, and good evasion. It is an exciting try-scorer when he gets the opportunity. There’s a lot there’s a lot to like about him,” he added.

Harris said: “I’m really excited to be joining Exeter Chiefs. It’s a club with a strong identity, an amazing fan base and a record of competing at the highest level.

“After speaking with the coaches, I felt this was the right environment for a fresh start. I enjoy the style of rugby Exeter plays, and I’m looking forward to contributing to the team’s ambitions in the coming seasons. I’m excited for this next chapter and can’t wait to get started with the boys.”

That’s a massive blow for Bath.

They had such super high hopes for this kid but with Santi, Arundell, Tom dG & Donoghue he was going to struggle for game time at Bath, so this should be a good move and wish him well.
