DMac will be at one of the best teams in Europe, under master coach and legendary fly half Ronan O'Gara, from December 25 to June 26. After that he's free to sign up with NZR and play tests.

Japan certainly has the money. Some French clubs too, even some of those in deficit. Even Ireland isn't averse to the odd big money signing, then you have Pat Lam at Bristol, Craig at Bath etc.

McReight is now heavier than George Smith, Derek. 108 kg v 102 kgs, and taller, 1.84 v 1.80. I have stood within a couple of metres of both men, and I was surprised that Smith was smaller than I expected...that was at the end of Smith's career when he played that one year or so for the Reds under Brad Thorn. McReight I saw at Suncorp last year after the Chiefs game. I was struck by his width across the shoulders, and depth of chest.

I think the sevens stint has skewed opinion on du Pont. Sure he's one of the best ever but imagine what Gareth or Joost would have done on a seven's pitch. Admittedly he was nursing a fractured cheek bone but du Pont wasn't great under real pressure at the Wc or in the Paris game where 14 Boks very nearly beat France. Also his style of play suits the way the French play. In a different era, different rules or in a different team it's impossible to say how good he would have been. So really it's an extremely moot discussion.

Yes we haven't seen them playing as much in combo as you do for the Reds, but I don't feel the B/R for the Lions is fully settled yet, esp if Skelton starts.

You can see the confidence ont he WB players growing game by game and it is good to see Sage. The Ireland result won't dent that. The WBs have to attract interest for the game to grow in a country where it is such a crowded sports market.

Yes it's important for them to have some success v the Lions as it is one of the biggest stages they have to advertise the game - esp as Lions tours often seem to collide with Origin which tends to limit the column inches for rugby!
