Gloucester 'sadly' confirm Jack Singleton stood down after cardiac incident
Gloucester and England hooker Jack Singleton has been ruled out for an extended period after suffering a cardiac event in September, the club have confirmed.
In a medical update issued by Head of Medical Rhys Hughes, the West Country side stated: “Gloucester Rugby can sadly confirm that hooker Jack Singleton will not feature for an extended period of time.”
The club said the 29-year-old has been undergoing “a comprehensive period of medical testing in consultation with cardiac specialists” since the incident.
“Jack will continue to receive full support from the Gloucester Rugby medical team,” the statement read.
Singleton, who has been capped sevens times by England, last featured for Gloucester in Gallagher PREM Round 1 against Exeter.
The 5’11, 111kg hooker last featured for England against Argentina back in 2022, with a move to Toulon effectively ruling him out of contention for further Test honours.
His absence adds to an already significant Cherry and Whites injury list, with captain Lewis Ludlow, Arthur Clark and Jack Clement among those currently sidelined.
Vice-captain Clark has undergone foot surgery, while Clement and Ludlow have both gone under the knife for ankle and thumb injuries respectively.
Elsewhere, Val Rapava-Ruskin continues to manage a recurring knee problem, and prop Jamal Ford-Robinson is making “encouraging progress” following summer knee surgery.
Josh Hathaway and new signing Rob Russell are expected to return to training in the coming weeks, while young fullback Ben Redshaw has resumed light training after fracturing his ankle on England U20s duty.
Gloucester added that a number of players — including Olly Allport, George Barton, Will Butler, Max Llewellyn, Kirill Gotovtsev and George Knowles — are also unavailable due to short-term injuries.
In good news Gloucester’s All Blacks signing Nepo Laulala will finally make his debut when the Cherry and Whites face Bath in today’s Gallagher Premiership derby at The Rec.
The 53-cap New Zealand prop, who ruptured his Achilles last season, starts at tighthead after four months of rehab. Head coach George Skivington makes three changes from last week, with Matias Alemanno, Freddie Thomas and James Venter coming in as Gloucester stick with a 6–2 bench split.
