Former Ireland Sevens star Chay Mullins is set to continue his rise in the longer format of the game, the 24-year-old confirming a one-year deal with URC side Ulster.

Mullins enjoyed a decorated career in the Irish 7s program, making the squad for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, and winning a bronze medal at the Sevens World Cup in 2022.

He has also made it to the higher levels of Irish representation in the past, also playing for the Ireland U20s and working with Richie Murphy, who has since transitioned into Ulster’s head coaching role.

Mullins has since transitioned into a back-three role in 15s, having played at Connacht since 2024, making his debut for the side with a hat-trick against Zebre Parma.

The move to Ulster represents a significant shift for Mullins, who is now looking to chase higher honours in the Irish jersey.

“This is a really exciting move for me, and I was delighted to have this opportunity,” said Mullins to The42.

“I know the coaching staff very well from my time at the Irish U20s under Richie and having worked with Mark Sexton at Connacht.

“Having watched Ulster last season, it was clear to see the freedom they are playing  in attack and I feel that suits my game.

“Hopefully I can add to the team and progress as a player.”

“We are very pleased to be bringing in a player of Chay’s talent in this summer,” Rory Best, Ulster Rugby’s General Manager added following the announcement.

“With his promise shown in the Sevens programme and at Connacht, he represents a fantastic market opportunity for us.

“We believe his attributes will fit in well with our brand of rugby and the coaches are well aware of his ability having worked with him before.

“His versatility will be a welcome addition into our backline, and he will add strong competition for selection.”
