Fiji have booked their spot in the HSBC SVNS Valladolid semi-finals with a dominant 40-0 win over traditional rivals New Zealand, with Terio Veilawa and George Bose among the try-scorers during a 28-0 blitz in the second half.

The Fijians claimed opening-day wins over Olympic champions France and an improving USA outfit, but their unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday. Spain gave their passionate home fans plenty to cheer about as they claimed an important 14-12 victory at Estadio Jose Zorilla.

But Fiji didn’t have to wait long for a chance to bounce back at the SVNS World Championship leg in northwestern Spain. The All Blacks Sevens were up next, with a spot in the final four the prize for the winning side.

Fiji squandered an early opportunity to score after running the length, but they still ended up striking first through Bose in the second minute. The All Blacks Sevens defended fairly well, but the unpredictable offloading game of the Fijians led to a Tomasi Vuluma try just before the half.

It was a 12-point ballgame at the break, with the Fijians taking things up a gear in hot conditions. Terio Veilawa dove on a kick-ahead to add five to Fiji’s score in the ninth minute, as the team continued their remarkable point-scoring blitz.

New Zealand have always set the standard,” Fiji coach Osea Kolinisau said post-game on the broadcast, which you can watch on RugbyPass TV HERE.

“Fiji and New Zealand, you don’t have to fire Fiji boys up when you play New Zealand because of the rivalry, they just turn up.

“We know New Zealand have been playing well in the Championship… this week, we wanted to better than Hong Kong [China].”

Akuila Dranivotua, Nacani Boginisoko and Bose rounded out the one-sided triumph with tries late in the piece. Fiji are chasing just their second title of the 2025/26 season, claiming silverware for the second year running at SVNS Singapore.

The Fijians were still in the race for the regular season title at the final stop at SVNS New York, and it came right down to the wire. It couldn’t have been more dramatic, with South Africa and Fiji level on competition points entering the event.

Those two ended up qualifying for the SVNS New York Cup Final, and it was the Blitzboks who got the job done at Sports Illustrated Stadium. South Africa backed up those heroics at the first World Championship stop, winning the fan favourite Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens for the first time.

But with the ladder resetting the World Championship, the Fijians are still in with a chance of taking out the top prize. Fiji finished fifth at the Hong Kong Sevens are will look to make up ground on some of the higher-ranked sides in Spain.
