Japan Rugby League One outfit Canon Eagles confirmed his exit on Sunday, with it being reported in his native South Africa that the Bloemfontein-based Cheetahs have won the race to sign him.

De Klerk had been linked with a move back to Sale Sharks and a host of French clubs, but it was rumoured his price had turned off European suitors.

“We are beyond excited to welcome Faf to the Cheetahs family,” said the Cheetahs in a statement, as reported by SA Rugby Mag.

“His tenacity on the field and his leadership off it are exactly what we need as we continue to compete at the highest level. Faf is a player who changes the tempo of a game, and we know our supporters are eager to see him in the orange jersey.”

De Klerk left an emotional statement on the Canon Eagles website after four seasons at the club that he left Sale Sharks for in 2021, writing: “It’s with a full heart that I look back on my time with the Yokohama Canon Eagles. From the moment I arrived in Japan, I was welcomed into something truly special. This club is more than just a team – it’s a family.

“The culture, the professionalism, and the pride everyone takes in representing the jersey made every day an incredible experience. To the supporters – thank you. Your passion and support never went unnoticed. Whether at a host game or a visitor game, you created an atmosphere that lifted us and made playing for this club something I will always cherish.

“To my teammates and staff – I’m grateful for the friendships and memories we’ve built together. It’s a special group of people, and I’ve learned so much from being part of it.

“Japan has become a place very close to my heart. I leave with nothing but respect and appreciation for everyone involved with the Yokohama Canon Eagles. Thank you for everything, it’s been an honour.”
