Ex-Springbok criticises Ardie Savea after Scott Robertson’s ABs exit

It’s been over a week now since New Zealand Rugby made the decision to part ways with All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson, who won 20 out of the 27 Tests in his two-year tenure.

Robertson, who won seven Super Rugby Pacific titles as Crusaders coach, left his role as head coach of the All Blacks as they headed into the second half of the four-year World Cup cycle.

All Blacks and Crusaders prop Tamaiti Williams is one of the first current players to speak out, sending his love and prayers to Razor’s family.

“It’s a tough world we live in, right? But a lot of love and prayers go to Razor and his family. I know he’s going to do well, whatever he does,” Williams said.

“And for us as players, we’ve just got to get together and figure it out, I guess. Looking forward to what’s next, but also, love to Ray.”

According to reports by the New Zealand Herald, prior to Robertson’s departure, the 2023 World Rugby Player of the Year, Ardie Savea, was at the forefront of players’ concerns about where the All Blacks team was heading.

The Herald also reported that Savea would rethink his future in the black jersey if changes to the coaching staff weren’t made.

Former Springboks prop Steven Kitshoff has given his take on what went down inside All Blacks camp, saying that if the reports about Savea are true, he isn’t a fan of how it all played out.

“In the Springboks environment, Rassie would go, ‘if that guy is acting out, I won’t select him anymore’, even if he’s the best player. We’re not picking the best players, we’re picking the right players,” the prop said on the GameTime podcast.

“Ardie’s move like that is not the right move. Are you saying you’re the best and it’s either me or him? I’m ranting but it’s just something I read and I was a bit sour about it.

“I might have read it wrong or it may not have given the full picture but, with the article that came out, it’s a bit tough for me. As a player you get selected to do a job.”

Kitshoff suggests that Savea should have “manned up”, and taken a different approach in addressing his concerns.

“That’s where I’m like if Ardie could have just manned up and said: ‘I take full ownership to what happened to this team this year and I’m going to do my bit to change the course of side’.

“I would have been like, ‘Ardie, that is the way to do it’… and that’s what I didn’t like.”

“I don’t know if it’s one player, but one player is public about it and goes, ‘it’s either him or me. If you don’t get rid of him, I’m going to play my rugby at Leinster or in Japan’. That is not caring about your country and putting your country first.”

Totally agree with SK! Ardie should be very careful because what comes around goes around. Don't forget that the same people you meet going up are the same ones you meet going down. You were made captain and you had full games under Razor, yet, how did you play with such an angry and a judgemental heart Ardie? If you didn't like Razor, why did you continue to play under him? It just feels wrong from a psychological point of view. I hope you are very happy that you helped to get rid of Razor. Not just you but Mealamu too. Your names have been well used by NZRU to justify Razor's exit as AB coach. What exactly didn't you like about Razor? It's also very short-sighted on NZRU.

Player revolts almost never happen in stable, well‑led environments. They happen when: Communication channels break down, Leadership loses trust, Management fails to set clear expectations, Accountability becomes inconsistent, Star players gain disproportionate influence. When a player—no matter how talented—feels empowered to issue “change or I leave” ultimatums, that’s not just immaturity. That’s a vacuum of authority. Strong systems don’t allow individuals to become bigger than the jersey. The “sinking ship” metaphor isn’t dramatic—it’s accurate. The decline didn’t start yesterday. The All Blacks used to dictate the global game. Now they’re responding to it. That’s a dangerous shift.

Heading to South Africa in this state? That’s not a storm on the horizon—that’s sailing straight into a hurricane with patchwork repairs. The Springboks winning 4 out of 8 Rugby World Cups is absurd. It’s dynasty‑level dominance. And they’ve done it while other nations have had double the opportunities.

The Boks don’t just win tournaments—they break teams psychologically. They expose weaknesses ruthlessly. And right now, the All Blacks have weaknesses everywhere. This new coach isn’t walking into a high‑performance machine. He’s walking into:

A fractured culture, A leadership vacuum, A fan base losing patience, A global field that has caught up—and in some cases surpassed them. Rebuilding the All Blacks isn’t a one‑season job. It’s a multi‑year cultural reset. All I will say is good luck.

“I’m ranting”

“I might have read it wrong or it may not have given the full picture but”

A real lack of maturity here by Mr. Kitschoff. This is something that a 20 year old with an under-developed brain would say, not a retired player well into their adulthood.

When you take a person on, at least spell his name correct. The comment by Kitsie is being taken way out of context. The take-out from this should in fact be that players think they are irreplaceable and think that the team will fail without them. And yet this happens in every team, all over the world, not just in the AB team. If a player has no more commitment to his own country’s team, he should take his boots and go. He should be replaced, and not be allowed to try and dictate to his team, his coach or his country for that matter. If you as a player no longer has the heart to play for your own country, then release yourself and go. You will NOT perform like you should and you will disgrace your team, country and your own self respect.

When you pull on the jersey and step over the whitewash, its then up to you as the player to take ownership, the coaches have done their bit.

Own the performance!!

I dont know one person that had confidence or was even happy with the way Razor was coaching our national team or the way he was fronting up to the media or the Captain he appointed, or the lack of innovation when we expected to see a lot of it.

Now everyone is saying “Razor fired? Wait, What did you do thst for?!”

Well too late now.

Can we just go back to the old days and the old ways. When ^winning history percentage* wasnt a thing and “no dick-heads allowed” was. When fans didnt skite and skills did the talking and we were humble and never stumbled!!?

The article from the NZ Herald was itself speculation, if they’re allowed to do it then it’s fair game for anyone else to speculate in return (even ex-Bok players 😉).

As a kiwi, I took his rant/statement as him seeing that type of action as disloyal/cowardly - which it absolutely is - Ardie's a grown ass professional, if he had concerns/issues with how Razor was running things then be a man & say it to him directly (saving it for some “anonymous” end of year review is something you'd expect from a moody teenager looking to spite a teacher, not a veteran professional sports person).

This is the problem with NZ. Their supposed “no dickheads” policy is window dressing for the sponsors. Remind again how many players got picked after being convicted for battery of their partners? Standards slip and reprehensible acts are excused all in the name of winning and keeping the brand alive. Chickens coming home too roost. The next All Blacks coach has to rebuild the entire house - from the foundations up. Remains to be seen whether they choose the right players or the best players… Silverlake expect results and a return on their investment.

A lot of speculation about how it all went down. The fact that Ardie was said to be considering a European move knowing it would put him outside AB eligibility does not equal a threat from him for Razor to go. Kirk dismissed this suggestion and noted the player input was respectful, thoughtful and honest. He also noted that the player input confirmed concerns from the NZR and the decision to part ways was either now or not until after 2027. Ardie played big minutes but went missing in some AB games and should not have larger input than any other “stake-holder”. His position should not be guaranteed but earned campaign by campaign. The “player power” narrative is sensational but likely, erroneous.

A lot of speculation about how it all went down.

That’s why I was disappointed by Kirk in not being upfront and honest in his first interview. What’s he hiding behind? Does he know he’s done something bad? Otherwise just come out and if you’ve done the right that then that is how you’ll be judged. No problems.

The “player power” narrative is sensational but likely, erroneous.

Aye? Fosters reign a blank for you already Utiku OB? I envy you!

I have first hand knowledge of what happens when you loose a change room. Player loyalty disappears like Scotch mist. He put pressure on - anyway it had that effect whether he wanted to do so or not.
