Edinburgh Rugby have acted to fill the void left by Springbok Boan Venter’s impending departure, securing the signing of Alec Hepburn from Scarlets, as reported by RugbyPass in January.

The five-cap Scotland international, who earned six caps for England as well in 2018, will make the move north after two seasons in Wales.

The 33-year-old has become the club’s fifth signing ahead of next season, after ramping up their recruitment drive in recent weeks.

Venter, meanwhile, will return to his native South Africa at the end of the season after five years in the Scottish capital, joining the Lions.

Having earned the last of his caps in July 2025, Hepburn featured for Scotland A against Italy A in February, before being called into Gregor Townsend’s squad at the end of their Guinness Six Nations campaign.

“I’m very excited to be joining Edinburgh,” Hepburn said after signing. “It’s a club with great depth and talent within the squad to push very high in all competitions.

“It’s nice to know a few of the guys already. Getting the chance to work week in and week out with them will hopefully bring the best out of me and prove myself in a different environment.

“I have enjoyed Edinburgh every time I’ve been there and look forward to calling it home for the foreseeable future.

“Pre-season will roll around fast and I’m looking forward to the challenge it brings and putting my best foot forward.”

Head coach Sean Everitt added: “We’re really pleased to be adding a player of Alec’s calibre to our squad.

“He’s a seasoned international loosehead who has operated at the highest level throughout his career – Champions Cup finals, Premiership titles, Six Nations. That kind of experience and knowledge is invaluable in any group.

“Alec strengthens the depth we have in an important position and adds genuine competition for places, which can only drive standards higher.

“Having someone of his background in our changing room will also be hugely beneficial for the younger props coming through. That blend of quality and leadership is exactly what we’re looking for as we continue to build.”
