Eben Etzebeth staring at huge ban after another red card

South Africa lock Eben Etzebeth became the third Springbok to be shown a red card of the Quilter Nations Series as he was dismissed with just seconds remaining of his side’s 73-0 win over Wales at the Principality Stadium.

The Bok legend was shown a straight red card for putting his thumb in the eye of Wales’ Alex Mann during a fracas in the 79th minute.

Referee Luc Ramos had no choice but to brandish a red card in the double World Cup winner’s 141st Test match.

Etzebeth follows in the footsteps of fellow locks Lood de Jager and Franco Mostert, who have both received red cards this series.

Gouging carries a lengthy ban in rugby, with the low-end entry point being 12 weeks, but cases have also resulted in over 24-week bans. Extreme cases have seen players banned for two years.

Etzebeth will appear before a disciplinary panel this week, but a lengthy ban is surely incoming for the 34-year-old.

Having been named on the bench in Cardiff, the lock was part of the eight-man replacement change made by Rassie Erasmus on 51 minutes of the match, but managed to get in on the scoring with a try just minutes before his red card. It was actually a record-breaking try, as it broke England’s record for the most points scored against Wales at their home ground.

The match finished minutes after the red card incident, and the lock took to the field again to shake hands with the opposition, appearing in good spirits.

Words were exchanged between Etzebeth and the Welsh flanker, who was clearly upset by what had happened, and continued to shout something as the Bok walked away.

It is over six months before South Africa play again, which means a ban may not affect Etzebeth’s international career unless he is slapped with a punishment of over 30 weeks. His club side, the Sharks, however, will suffer more heavily, with contests against European giants Toulouse and Saracens coming over the next two weeks in the Investec Champions Cup.

Disciplinary Panel has apparently now (Wednesday) requested additional time to seek consensus on the severity of the sanction of EE. Hopefully cool heads will prevail and determine an appropriate, objective and reasonable sanction for what in my humble estimation at worst seems to have been a rash, reckless and stupid retaliation on EE’s part.

This match should never have been taken by SA, it offered little as a contest, did little for each team and probably has damaged SA more than the record loss to Wales.

A great way to sour what has been an incredible achievement by the SB team that nobody is talking about and after these actions. Utter madness by Eben that has damaged the achievements of this team.

Etzebeth has always been a ferocious, abrasive competitor but those crazy few seconds of red mist will likely forever taint what has been a brilliant career.

Nobody wants to be remembered like that, especially one of the all time greats of the game. Real shame, especially in the dying embers of a one sided contest that added little for either side.

If that is the end of Eben’s glorious SB career, damaging his legacy after all those caps, it will be far more damaging than any potential ban he receives. He will have to carry that moment of madness for the end of his days and is a final memory he will never escape.

Well put. All I would add is that we reserve judgment on the true nature of his act. He deserves that.

I mean Ebens behaviour was odd and I was surprised. But this comment is even more ridiculous. You are blaming the bloke who was eye gouged? 😂😂

I’ve changed my tune about Etzebeth a little due to what Graham has said.

The character evidence is of decent man with a great relationship with all his team mates who has a temper he tries to control. We have seen him become enraged a few times over the years.

He lost the plot yesterday, he obviously still hadn’t calmed down when he met the injured player later.

He still needs to book thrown at him, it was deliberate, but the mitigation was a natural inclination red mist which he does try to control but not always successfully.

He tries though unlike a Darth Vader character like Bakkies who embraced the drak side completely.

Saffa here. Eben should get a minimum of 8 months for this. The force applied on that eye was just bad. And the face Eben was making while doing this shows you there was intent there. Dupuy from France got 24 months for something less evil than what Eben did. Let’s see what happens.

Well that did not look good. Surly there is a story behind this because the players must know that with camera angles everywhere there is no chance to get away with something like that. It looked like he was going for a The Mountain and the the Viper kind of vibe. With the scoreline what it was there was no need for that. This will be a lenthy ban for EE.

SA were 73-0 up away from home with 2 minutes left in a match were they were playing against the worst wales team in living memory, already depleted of 13 regular players. A fantastic tour results wise in the bag, no injury worries and number 1 team in the world rubber stamped.

To call this brain dead doesn’t quite do Etzebeth justice. An exceptional player, but a 34 year old, 6ft 8” man to gouge another player in the eye is cowardly and disgusting. He has proven in interviews in the past that he isn’t the cleverest, quite dense, a bit dull, lobotomised you could say?! This just reinforces the image he portrays. He’s looking at a lengthy ban.
