'Devastated': Steve Tandy reveals extent of injury to Wales' Jac Morgan
Wales captain Jac Morgan has been ruled out for the remainder of the autumn after dislocating his shoulder during Sunday’s 52-28 defeat to Argentina in Cardiff.
A mid-length timeline for recovery from a shoulder dislocation also throws a degree of doubt on Morgan’s participation in the Guinness Six Nations, although a best-case scenario would see him return in time for the tournament, which kicks off in 88 days time.
The flanker, who had led from the front and scored a brilliant solo try before going off injured, left the Principality Stadium with his arm in a sling.
Head coach Steve Tandy confirmed the news post-match, describing the 25-year-old as “devastated”.
“He’s probably not looking good for the rest of the autumn,” said Tandy. “He dislocated his shoulder. He’s probably going to be no good. I’ve seen him in the changing rooms — he’s devastated. Ultimately, it’s just about Jac recovering. With that, it gives someone else an opportunity.”
Morgan’s setback is a hammer blow for Wales and Tandy, who was taking charge of his first game since replacing Warren Gatland. The Ospreys back-rower had been one of few bright sparks in an otherwise bruising afternoon for the hosts.
“It’s always a blow to lose any player, but losing Jac — he was outstanding out there,” Tandy added. “Not only just the player, but the man. The try he scored was unbelievable from that distance. It’s a blow. But it gives someone else an opportunity.”
Tandy confirmed that a replacement will be called up in the coming days, with Leicester’s Tommy Reffell and Ospreys openside Harri Deaves among those under consideration.
“We’ll definitely call someone up,” said Tandy. “We’ll discuss that as a coaching group later. But we’re losing Jac and there are some banged-up bodies. We’ll assess everything in the next 24 hours. Tommy is an outstanding international, playing well for Leicester, and Harri Deaves has been unbelievable for the Ospreys for a consistent period. We’ve got options.”
Wales face Japan next Saturday before taking on New Zealand and South Africa to close out their autumn campaign.
Tandy also provided an update on No.8 Aaron Wainwright, who was withdrawn in the second half. “I think he had a fair bit of cramp,” he said. “We’ve got to look at him and assess him over the next couple of hours.”
