All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie has explained his decision to leave out a fourth halfback for the Greatest Rivalry Tour of South Africa, after confirming his 44-man squad on Monday.

Rennie added Siale Lauaki, George Bell, Ollie Norris, Fabian Holland, Ethan Blackadder, Semesi Tupou Ta’eiloa, Josh Jacomb, Rieko Ioane, and Emoni Narawa as the ten additional players to tour South Africa.

One player who is among those overlooked is Crusaders halfback Noah Hotham, who many believed would feature in Rennie’s initial 34-man squad for the Nations Championship.

The new All Blacks head coach opted for Crusaders teammate Kyle Preston and Chiefs halfback Cortez Ratima over Hotham for the three Nations Championship fixtures against France, Italy, and Ireland.

Preston, who played most of his Super Rugby Pacific minutes in 2026 off the bench, didn’t feature at all for the All Blacks during July’s three Tests, with Ratima taking up the bench spot on all three occasions.

With an extra ten players on the plane to South Africa, for a bumper seven-week, eight-game tour, a fourth halfback was expected to join Rennie’s squad ahead of the tour.

But Rennie explained that if it came down to it, Chiefs winger Leroy Carter could shift into a halfback role, having played the position through the age groups.

“He [Carter] may well cover that role if we wanted to go six-two split. Having someone who can play nine and play wing gives us a bit more versatility.

“Obviously, Noah Hotham’s the obvious choice as the fourth halfback, and if we were to get an injury, then we’d bring in a replacement.”

In 2024, former Chiefs head coach Clayton McMillan said they signed Carter from the All Blacks Sevens knowing the speedster could play both positions.

“We love his competitive edge, abrasive style and that he is a legitimate hybrid player – comfortable on both the wing or at halfback,” McMillan said.

When asked about how the three halfbacks will work together during the first two weeks of the tour, when they play three domestic South African sides before the first Test, Rennie said they’re keen to see what Ratima and Preston are made of.

“Cam’s [Roigard] has had a lot of footy. We’re keen to get a lot more rugby into the other two boys, and so they’ll share a big chunk of the load in the first three weeks.”

They can manage it with three. Game 1: Ratima starts, Preston on the bench plays last 10 mins. Game 2 (Wednesday): Preston starts, Ratima plays the last 10. Game 3 Roigard starts as it’s likely a dry run for a mainly top 23, Ratima on the bench. They can do it fairly easily with three halfbacks. Injury is the issue, I guess, but they can call up a replacement or addition to the squad if needed.

If Leroy Carter is viewed as a potential scrum-half, it changes the equation regarding the need for a third scrum-half ahead of the next Rugby World Cup. It may well be unnecessary. There could realistically be only two No. 9s in the squad for the next RWC.

Leroy Carter and Leicester Fainga’anuku could even be added later in the year to a matchday squad, with a 6–2 bench that could, in practice, almost become a 7–1!

No need for a specialist No. 9 or No. 10 with Love and DMK on the field and Carter providing cover.

That opens up some very promising possibilities.

For me and I get the possibilities for bench but what excites me is the potential of Leroy being actual “ imoact” off bench as he brings some x-factor with his speed and sniping but a whole heap of attitude physicality snd just plain old gets stuck in

OK so Carter is a half back

Faianuku ( if available) is only a wing

Lio Willie can’t even get in the Maori ABs

Cynical thought but only 6 South Island players made up the 1st squad of 34 players for the 3 tests played this year

Message seems to be- Go off- shore and earn some $$

Weakens things somewhat down south

But GO BOYS

Don’t think Rennie meant he was just a wing but a outside back / midfielder who could play loosies if needed would 100% be in the squad and contention for 23 if fit why he was listed in the injured basically acknowledging they would be there ..whi are the southern boys you think should be there ? And for who?

Well it was No shock when Rennie chose as many Chief players as he could and has continued to start Dmac at 15 even though he hasn't been great. I'm not Hurricanes fan but you must feel for Kirifi being overlooked for Jacobson but very happy that Rennie has brought Blackadder back into the squad as he had a really good season in super rugby and stayed pretty much Injury free !!

Good luck Lads on your trip to S Africa…
