Dan Lancaster follows Owen Farrell out the door at Racing 92

Dan Lancaster has officially left Racing 92 after reaching the end of his one-year contract in Paris.

The 24-year-old joined the Top 14 outfit last summer, linking up with his father Stuart, who was head coach at the time. However, Stuart’s sacking in January effectively ensured his son would leave the club as well upon the conclusion of his contract.

RugbyPass have reported that Lancaster is a target for former United Rugby Championship winners Glasgow Warriors, who are set to lose Scotland’s Tom Jordan, who can also cover fly-half and centre.

Former Racing 92 president Laurent Travers, who will be Bayonne’s new director of rugby next season, could potentially hijack Lancaster’s move to Scotland.

The former England U20 international is of course not the first high-profile exit from La Defense Arena this week, as he follows in the footsteps of compatriot Owen Farrell, who has rejoined Saracens.

Lancaster found himself filling in for Farrell in the No.10 jersey for a large chunk of the season, while the former England captain nursed an adductor injury.

Lancaster’s final game in the blue and white of Racing came in the penultimate match of their Top 14 campaign, where he started at fly-half in a 25-27 home defeat to Montpellier. Despite the defeat, Racing had already staved off the threat of relegation at that point, despite being in a precarious position earlier in the season.

A move to Glasgow next season would mean that the former Leicester Tiger would be taking on his father next season, who was named Connacht head coach earlier this month.

In a recent interview with The Times, Stuart appeared to suggest that the move to Glasgow is a done deal, where Dan could pursue international honours with Scotland, for whom he also qualifies.

He said: “Coaching Dan was no problem and he proved his quality to Racing. It’d be fair to say he was probably the lowest-paid player in the squad. He played the most games in the most pivotal position. They decided not to keep him, that’s their choice. But he’s been recognised by Glasgow to be a good player and with his Scottish qualification [through Lancaster’s mother] hopefully pursue that route, which is good for him.”
